GTX 560 vs HD 6870 Opinions Please

Thread Starter
Well tax time is here so it's time to upgrade the old 9800GTX. I usually spend no more then $250 on a card and get a couple of years out of it, but there's alot out there now so I'm hoping to get some opinions from everyone.

I originally planned on getting a GTX 460 but it seems that their price/performance ratio is slumping with the 500 series out.

So I'm looking at either getting a GTX 560 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127565&cm_re=gtx_560-_-14-127-565-_-Product

Or going with ATI again and getting an HD 6870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102909&cm_re=6870-_-14-102-909-_-Product
(not sure if I want to based on my experience with my old 3870)

Any and all advice is welcome please, thank you in advance.

The GTX560 is a better bang for your buck... Sad for me to say that AMD really wasn't on their game with this gen.

My only question is how is the price/performance of a 460 slumping?

You can almost find deals to get a pair of 460s for the price of a single 560. Sure its not the newest tech or the preferred future proof choice, but its still viable, unless you looking for a single card solution that is.

In which case 560 all the way =D

Yeah, I'm looking for a single card primarily. I'm sure my wife would rather I get 1 x GTX 460 and save some money lol, but I'm not sure they are worth it anymore with the 560 only being $50 more.

I don't really know why people keep pitting the 6870 against the 560 when they aren't each others adversaries. OP have you looked at the 1GB version of the 6950? It is priced about the same as a 560. However, if you are bent only on those choices go with the 560.
I have a 6870 and I am currently thinking about selling it for 2 gtx 560's. It performs great but I would like something better. I hit around 50-60fps in most games with that and my physx card. I would recommend you get the 560 or a 6950. youll regret it. the 6870 would be worth it if the price was between $179.99-$199.99. but its not.

You can get a HD 6950 1GB for $240 AR. Better bang for your buck IMO.

Otherwise GTX 560 Ti > HD 6870

Between those two in OP, GTX560 gets my vote.

I didn't actually look at the 6950's. Newegg has them for a little bit more then the GTX 560's. I'm planning on getting a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition as well so I'm trying to keep the cost below $400. My wife doesn't care, she games as well, but we just had a baby last year so booster seats and security gates are being worked into the budget as well smile.gif. It's not much of a price difference, but convincing the other half to spend $400 is easier then $450 on paper lol.
