My build... Its been long overdue

Thread Starter
Last build I did was from left over parts from a friends PC, it did me well for the last two years. Anyways, building a new PC solely for gaming. I'm planning on OC'ing to the max stable it can handle. My only concern is proper case ventilation, which may end up in a new case all together when I send the board back for RMA (when they have the official recall).

What I have on deck (building it tonight!):

Case: VA8000
Power: Kingwin LZ-1000 1000watt
HSF: Cooler Master Hyper 212 +
Mobo: ASUS P8P67 Pro
Mem: G.SKILL Ripjaws 2 x 4GB F3-12800CL7D-8GBRH
CPU: 2600K
HD: 2x150gb Raptors
Vid: eVGA 570 GTX

I posed another thread in the Case forum to get some idea's on how to mod the case to get some better air flow. here: http://www.overclock.net/computer-ca...-add-side.html

If you have any comments / idea's let me know. I'll post up how its goes tonight.

What type of budget, if any, are you on? If no budget then it looks good to me. If you're worried about pinching pennies however, knock yourself down to a 2500K and save $100. Also, two Raptors in RAID 0 I assume are pretty fast. But at that price ($200-$300), you could get a good 64GB or even a 128GB SSD which will be faster -- way faster.

Other than that, you're lookin' good The 570 will overclock to near 580 performance, and the 2600K as you probably already know, overclocks like a champ.

As far as the case goes, you can add some fans (and filters if need be). It doesn't look too bad. Though the top-mounted PSU may hinder exhaust fans flexibility.

No budget really.. I picked up the 2600k already at microcenter ($279), I debated between the 2500k and 2600k for a while. I already had the Raptors in hand from my old build, so thats a wash. I'd love to get a SSD, but i couldnt justify that cost for the minimal space. I'll upgrade to one once the prices come down on the 256gb drives.

Well the SSD aren't supposed to be justified for their space, you need to justify them for their insane speeds. They aren't meant for storage, just Boot drives or load games from.

The PSU is allright, i'd go with something else but hey your choice.

the 570 GTX .... ooohhhh Sexay, She will take you many ways.

Makes sense. Raptors in RAID 0 and short stroked will be pretty dang fast.

Thats a good point about the SSD's, this is just a gaming machine Hrmmm... microcenter does have the crucial 128gb's in stock. I need to see how much faster is a SSD over raid 0 w/those old raptors.

The PSU seemed to get pretty good reviews, especially w/price vs performance.
I'm psyched to see how the 570 runs!

Any SSD is going to decimate a traditional hard drive. And while you can get somewhat kinda sorta close to SSD read/writes in multi-disk RAID 0 arrays, access times (which are the biggest thing you notice about SSDs) are next to nothing on SSDs. No matter how many hard drives you have RAIDED you won't be able to come close to SSD access times.

I picked up a SSD last night after i realized I had the older style WD raptors, which are slower then the newer 7200 RPM drives in terms of access speed and whatnot. I debated about it for over an hour at micro center, then picked it up. Figured if I was going to do raid 0, I'd be spending at least $200 anyways, whats an extra 50 bucks at this point.

I was able to get everything assembled last night. I installed Win 7, updated the drivers, then it was close to 2am and hit the sack. When I get home from work today, I'm going to start benchmarking.

Besides the intel chipset and SATA drivers and the Nvidia drivers, is there any other drivers that are important?

I did some playing around last night...

With everything at stock levels: 5094 - http://3dmark.com/3dm11/616179

Overclocked to 4.8 on CPU: 5832: http://3dmark.com/3dm11/616765

I need to keep reading and tweaking.
