WCG Dell Poweredge?

Thread Starter
Hey everybody,

I tried looking this up but couldn't find anything reliable...
I'm in the process of trying to collect old\\broken machines from people so I can start up my own WCG Farm on the cheap (every bit helps right...). I was wondering how effective Dell Poweredge servers are at crunching?

For instance the Poweredge 2650 that has 2x 2.6ghz Xeon's...

I've seen these online for well under $200, is it worth it?

I'm guessing the xeons are single cores?

When looking for a WCG cruncher really only CPU speed matters so you want whatever will give you the most GHz and cores.
its not the speed but the amount that can be crunched per hz. imagine this. a 3.4ghz 2600k sandy bridge has 4 core. put that up against 2xdual core P4's running at 3.4ghz. which will get more work done?

Yeh I definitely agree about the CPU speed... The only issue is I really have no budget, I'm trying to put together whatever I can, have some people giving me old machines they don't use etc.

I saw your 12+ i7 build with the car radiators, thats pretty awesome man, major props for that project....

Speed isn't everything. Architecture matters. A P4 Prescott at 3GHZ is beaten by almost double when crunching a WCG work unit by a C2Q Q8200 @ 2.33GHZ. (source: my experience when I upgraded from p4 to q8200)
