460 SLI or different card? - Page 2

The 580 would probably buy me 4 years or so if I upgraded to a second in a couple years.
ah in 4 years 580 will probably cost as today 4 years old 8800 costs

580 or 460sli will last practically the same, let's say 4 years from now when you make the next upgrade

Gtx 4/5-60's just aren't all that strong once you consider the current pricing and the fact that its two cards and there is no upgrade path.

vs a single gtx 470:

Take into consideration that gtx 470's are going for around $220 new, and even less used it's a no brainer. The 470's are giving the best bang for the buck currently. However a gtx 580 is pretty much exactly the same as gtx 460 sli... Until you start adding high amounts of eye candy/res, then the bus and rops for the gtx 580 will make it much faster than gtx 460's in sli.

Dude, your 470 is heavily oced under water and that 875Mhz OC on 460s is just a mild OC on air.

OP, just go with another 460 and enjoy 580's performance or more at a lower price. 2 460s will last you at least another 2 years. If you just keep thinking "I'm gonna grab another one for SLI later", you might never get it done coz we always wanna try new stuff, new technology, don't we all?

Be a smart buyer.

Most cards can easily do 850 on air, mine can go higher if I use another program to increase the clocks or flash a higher base clock.

Still doesn't make sense even at 850, two gtx 470's are almost the same price as two gtx 460's and they will out perform the 460's.

Not only that, putting them under water gives you another big boost, and having the option to add a third makes them a better buy if you want the ability to addon later on with tri sli.

GTX 460's only made sense when they were $200 and gtx 470s were $350.

460 SLI beats a single 580 in the majority of scenarios and is much cheaper. That said, I wouldn't pay $210 for a new gtx460... I got mine for $160 each after rebates (bundled with 2 free games ).

Keep your eyes peeled for a good sale price and grab a 2nd 460 imo. You won't be disappointed.

GTX460 SLI is the best bang for the buck combo. Dont fall into the trap that you have to get the best single card right now so you can get another one later. When later happens then everyone will say sell your 580 for example and get the 680 so you can run SLI later.

vs a single gtx 470:

You're not serious with this comparison are you? An i5 Lynnfield at 4.4Ghz vs an i5 2500k at 5GHz? That's the only reason those scores are so close. The GPU scores are 8k apart and the 460s aren't even as heavily OC'd...

This is what I'm talking about.

I've owned 3 470s (Gigabyte SOC, MSI 465 GE, Galaxy GC) and from what I saw on OCN, I can tell you that not many 470s can achieve a stable 800Mhz OC on air under 1.087v as it's just getting too hot over that voltage for air cooling.
The last sentence is just silly. Who would pay 75% more for 20% performance gain and GF104 is a much better chip than GF100.
