can a 6850 handle eyefinity? - Page 2

OP has Asus HD6850 and it has full size Display Port (not mini).

Secondly the only time you *need* an active adapter is if the monitor being hooked up is 1920x1200 or larger. There are passive adapters that work and some that do not, there are also active ones that work and some do not work. This rumor of *needing* an expensive active adapter got started because El Cheapo adapters often work less often than expensive ones.

If you have a regular Display Port do the same but just for well display ports.....

here is a great page of AMD certified adapters. AMD also shows Passive Adapters which like Skripka said should also work.

http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/...y-dongles.aspx
passive adapters "DO NOT" work...take it from me, i ordered one originally because it didnt specify active/passive and it was only 15$...i was eyefinityless for 3 days because of this...just get the saphire 24$ active display port adapter from newegg...another tip: lots of people think you need a USB powered display port to dvi adapter...this is an urban legend, but i repeat...passive adapters DO NOT WORK with more than 2 monitors, the "active" is what allows you to activate the #3 monitor without turning off monitor #1 or #2 to do so...

with passive adapter, when your duplicating your monitors and getting ready to setup your 3x1 eyefinity array, if your adapter is passive you can duplicate 2 monitors, when u try to duplicate the 3rd it makes you deactivate either #1 or #2

if this wasnt crystal clear let me know

I think for the res that you spec'd a single 6850 should be fine
that depends, are you trying to "play games" or you trying to kick the **** out of them?! my CF 6850's run max everything @ 5760x1080

You'd better come over here and tell my DP-VGA passive adapter that it doesn't work for my 3-monitor Eyefinity setup...You;d also better tell Malveaux over here the same:

what did that passive adapter cost you? and what resolution does your DP-VGA adapter support?

what i will tell you is vga sucks, passive adapters do not work according to AMD and my own experience...but i'm glad your vga eyefinity and sub HD res works for you but i wouldnt recommend it to others when they can skip the hassle and get the "active" adapter for 25 bones that is DP-DVI

IIRC$25-30+shipping.

The whole active vs. passive thing doesn't make much rational sense. As the different adapters will call on the GPU to generate it's signal differently. Active adapters make less sense, as they have a great deal more work to do.

DP normally sends packets of data without a clock signal.

HDMI/DVI for example however uses a clock signal...I believe they use the same signal, but simply re-arrange pins.

An active adapter, tells the GPU to spit out a DP signal...the adapter would have to unpack the packeted DP output, then generate a clock signal...and then send the new signal to DVI.

A passive adapter tells the GPU to generate a standard DVI/HDMI signal and nevermind and send the signal through DP..which the adapter then simply rearranges the pins to create a standard DVI signal. Much less voodoo

At least that is my understanding.

Virtually no one can see a visible difference between the two (VGA/DVI) all else being equal. There are lots of DP-DVI adapter passive/and active, and the cheap end of both tend not to work.

my understanding is that in no way shape or form does any passive work, my understanding is also lots of people dont understand display ports and how they work hence a passive adapter working, my opinion tells me to listen to AMD since its there product and get an active adapter

curious...how long have u been using that adapter? from my understanding the eyefinity dongles not listed by AMD tend to die after a couple months...not to hijack from the OP, so yes...1 6850 is sufficient! lol

6850 will likely beable to handle some games but Eyefinity is pretty damn intensive, and showing increasing support across a number of games, and I Play whatever I can in Eyefinity.

Just don't be surprised that you can't max out the settings.

5870 solo can run basically all games in Eyefinity well, meaning high-max settings.

I would see a 6850 being around medium settings but since your running a lower Res, could maybe pull off high+.

But 2 6850 would rock for sure. =)
