Likely at the same time. However, a dedicated server isn't necessary for this as QuickBooks has its own log-in.
Some advantages of getting a server, though:
1. Always On - Sure, you can leave a desktop on all the time but a lot of people tend to turn them off.
2. Dedicated Resources - Imagine if your desktop was being used as the QuickBooks server and someone just ran a huge report. Not fun.
3. Stability - Less chances of the server catching a virus if people aren't using it as a desktop and downloading wallpapers, etc.
