Help with Ram and Q6600?

Thread Starter
Before I put the question forth I will give a back story first. I used to have an MSI p35 board which could overclock my cpu no problems to 3.6 without any issues with the ram and keeping them at the stock speed (this was when I have 800 mhz). Unfortunately it died due to a faulty PSU and now I have the p5q pro turbo.

Now the issue here is if I do a 400 x 9 to create 3.6ghz the ram speed can be set at 1066 which is the rated speed for my sticks (g.skill). For some reason they can't stay stable at that speed so I ended up doing 8 x 425ish and have my ram overclocked and yet now it is stable.

I am confused here, would it not be better to have the ram at the rated speeds to keep everything stable or if I wanted to reach my 3.6 is it honestly better to overclock the ram? Which also makes me wonder is there something with the ratio I am not aware of?

Thanks in advance,
JediCow

Currently it is just 2 sticks 2gb each with a voltage of 2.1. The timings are those recommended 5-5-5-15

some times the motherboard assigns normal DDR2 voltage of 1.9v to the ram.
Check to make sure it is at 2.1v and the timings are set correctly in the BIOS

Let me get this straight: 400x9 doesn't work but 425x8 with now overclocked RAM is stable?

Edit: How much vcore were you giving it both with the old motherboard and now?

It has a vcore of 1.41 right now and with the old motherboard probably 1.3 if I remember correctly might have been a bit lower actually. Temps are fine as I idle in the high 20s
