I would also go for an Athlon II x4 over a Phenom II X2. There are some apps that benefit the L3 cache of the Phenom II, but most apps (even some games) favor the higher core count of the Athlon II X4. Here is a pretty detailed comparison:

If you can price match that certainly makes it a lot better, as the prices were rather inflated. $99 for an AthlonII X4 is not too shabby a deal...

but, again, I want you to bear in mind that for his uses 99% of the time 99% of these cores will lie dormant doing absolutely nothing. If $30 isn't a big deal to him, then it's always nice to have the capacity even if it's unused, just in case.

(You can even see using dragosmp's thread that more cores isn't always better as well:

Be wary, I suggested x4 640 to a local friend. Voltage wall below 3.6Ghz. Not a very good overclocker at all.

Hey,
Just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to respond I really appreciate it. I definitely need to stay on top of things in the future.

I ended up going with the AMD Athlon II X4 640.
I think this will be a good CPU for this guy and will allow him to expand a bit in the future should he so choose.

xd_1771 brings up a valid point that it may not be a good overclocker, but given the circumstances I do not think this guy will be overclocking his rig at all.

Hopefully I have made the right decision, the parts have been order tonight so they should arrive soon.

thanks again for all the help guys!

Cheers
For Fun
