Why do people go SLI/CF with new rigs? - Page 5

Ahh now I see why do other people go SLI/CF with new rigs but personally I'd still go with a higher end single GPU if the price and performance difference is only minimal, for more longevity, upgradability(not a real word) and not to mention more future proof.

Haha now that you mention that, it reminds me of the stereotypical person who drives SUV, same concept except for this is about computers and not cars eh? Unless of course they both drive an SUV and own a 12inch card on quad SLI/CF.(No intended offence to people who have SLI/CF/SUV's)

Excluding ATI here is what most people do.
I will be using 5 cards as examples: GTX460, GTX470, GTX560, GTX570, GTX580
1) GTX460. A person that bough it when it came out it was 200$ for him and that was the best he could get. Now he either can get something like a GTX56/7/80 but getting another GTX460 will give him more performance per $ hence SLI.
2) A person that has 500$ now want the best money can get then he would get something like GTX560 SLI. Hence SLI again.
3) A person has 350$ but he cant quite get 2 fast card and doesn't want to get GTX460s he get a GTX570 with future possibility of either getting GTX670 or SLI it hence again SLI.
4) GTX470 again same situation as GTX570 he bought it for 350$ and now for 180-200 he can get performance faster then GTX580 hence SLI.
5) Finally GTX580. This one is special. Here are different type of people that get this card. 1] Is people that want to best single card. 2] People that want the fastest card and SLI or Tri-SLI for Ultimate FPS. 3] A person that has 500$ and want the most for the future so he is going to save another 500$ and SLI unless something better comes out. 4] Its a card for those that cant stand SLI or CF. I have it and it can play all my games @ 1200p Maxed out with exclusion of Metro and Crysis pulls 40s @ 8AA Vhigh.

Your experience doesn't encompass all scenarios or even most scenarios. It may not be worth it for you but it's definitely worth it for many.

It's all about the min fps in the games you want to play.

My opinion here regarding the single 580 is that since these top end card change so quickly, the point of getting "fatest card single gpu solution" is moot. It's like buying a 480 then realize four months later that the 570 is just as fast while being quieter.

Because I can get good performance out of two mid range cards that don't cost me the earth.

Because I have a Crossfire motherboard and may aswell make the most of it.

Because it looks awesome having two graphics cards in your case with a Crossfire bridge attached to them.

Because if one breaks I still have another one to play with.

Because I want to make my mate jealous.

Because I want to.
