Am I getting the best laptop for my money?

I'm looking at the Asus G50VT for $500. It has :
Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4ghz
An nvidia 9800gt
4GB of ram ddr2 667
320gb hard drive 5400rpm

Can I get a better laptop for gaming that is cheaper or the same price that is better than this one? I don't care about screen size or whether it's new or used.

Thanks for looking

I would say yes, that is a great deal for that preformance at that price. Because usally for 500$ you don't get a dedicated GPU and a low clocked CPU (1.8-2.1Ghz).

We paid $1000 for one a year or two ago.

Only downside is the GPU failed randomly about a month ago. I think this suffered from the same fate as all those GeForce 8 series mobile chipsets that spawned that lawsuit; though of course this model wasn't included in the suit.

Keep in mind though, a 9800M GS (what these have) performs about on par with a desktop 9600GSO. Around Radeon 5550 territory.

would I be better off getting more money for an M11x? Or is there something better at that pricepoint?

The RAM specs are a little fishy. My G50VT-X5 had DDR2 800. And iirc a 7200RPM 320GB HDD. Are you looking at one of the one of the X1s or something? If you can dig around and you might snag a X5 which should have a 9cell. And yes at 500 that is a pretty good buy.

The only reason I could see getting a M11x is that you need something that small with that long of a battery life. And of course you know that you're not going to run into the hinge issue (shouldn't at this point). But at 800USD there are better options I believe.

What is the size you're looking at?

Size really isn't a big issue, except I would want something bigger than 16" because I have a desktop at home and would be using this when I'm not home. I'm just looking for something that can allow be to run mostly all games at least on low settings. I don't care how old it is or of it's used or not.

Is around 500$ your max? Because if it is, then yeah the laptop you found is one of the better deals, but if you have like 150$ of wiggle room it opens up other choices. Also recertified/open box cool? Or do you want new?

RAM should be fine. Higher clocked RAM tends to run hotter, if anything 667 is better. Only thing that matters about RAM clock speed is that it swaps as fast as the amount of RAM there is (for example, if running 4GB RAM it should run at >4GB/s bandwidth at least). The 667 RAM modules run well above that (5.3GB bandwidth speed) so there's no need to go for any faster RAM. If he should worry about anything memory related then it should be 1. The manufacturer of the RAM and the model as well as 2. Their latency.

P.S. one other thing I'd consider would be changing the HDD for a cheap low-end SSD (30GB-64GB) as one thing I've learned from experience is that the 2 things that are most likely to fail in a laptop are the fans and the mechanical drives. If I were you shakenbake158, I'd also run a benchmark on that thing and see what temperatures the GPU & CPU hit.
