Any way to extend the life?

Thread Starter
couple months ago I bought a WD 2TB Caviar Green hdd. I was in desperate need of more storage so I bought without doing research, I read recently its the type of hdd that "parks" when it isnt in use to reduce the energy it uses but that because it parks it lowers the life expectancy.

Is there any truth to that? If so is there software or anything I can do to help prolong the life?

Im not to familiar with the green versions and the park feature[which i have never heard of]. Although I do know that if you keep your HDD's nice and cool it will prolong their life.

Well its in a small 2 slot hdd cage and both slots are occupied. I bought an hdd fan but there isnt room for it on the side that it should be on so its on the opposite side till I can get everything over to the new case.

You can use your operating system to have the drive 'sleep' when its not in use.

I've read conflicting stories - some say that it spinning up again reduces the life of the HDD, others that as it 'sleeps' it extends the life.

Really, all you can do is cross your fingers! I've had one HDD fail on my in the last 5 years. NEVER keep critical data on one drive (back it up to DVDs).

The green HDDs use less power. I don' think it's ever been claimed that they have a longer life than the blue or black drives.

The parking feature is simply to save power, any degragation of the drive because of that feature is minimal.
