Need Help Overclocking My ATI Radeon HD 5850

Thread Starter
As my first try at overclocking I decided to overclock my 5850 because it looked like it would be relatively easy to do but I have run into a problem.

I overclocked my video card as described in, How To: Overclock Your ATi GPU and every thing works fine in game and elsewhere but last night I went to play a You Tube video and the screen went black and then restored the desk top but the video would not play.

My GPU clock was 890 and memory at 1130, I turned it down a little at a time until the video would play with out problems but now the settings are GPU clock 780 and memory 1050.

I have an ATI Radeon HD 5850 Series, driver 8.801-101125a-109686E, all Gaming 3D Application Settings are turned up to High Quality in Catalyst Control Center.

Which model do you have? Have you tried increasing the voltage?

I found a thread where they said to disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player and that fixed it.

Not sure what you mean but my card is a ATI Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5 16X PCIe. In msi Afterburner the core voltage is grayed out and can't be adjusted so I am assuming I will not be able to do that unless there is another way. If there is I would like to try it if you can tell me how.

He means what brand is it like.. asus, msi ,xfx etc and you shouldn't have to turn hardware acceleration off either. The core or memory clock is causing the problem. i had my card stable in furmark but after hours of gaming i would get a bunch of blocks on screen after tweaking found out the memory clock was to high. To me it sounds like your core clock is a little to high when i had mine to high my drivers would restart

Sounds like the drivers restarted?

I don't know what brand my video card is I will need to take the cover off the case and look. I tried turning my memory clock down to the standard setting of 1050 and left my core clock at 890 but it still hangs up with the hardware acceleration enabled. The game I have is a flight sim called Condor and I have finished several 2 hour long races with out any problems at all with my core clock at 880 and memory clock at 1130. I also ran the TechPowerUp GPUTool stability test for about 3 hours and everything worked with out problems. Last night I discovered that re-setting the Catalyst Control Center Gaming 3D Application settings back to stock also eliminated the problem.

Just a guess but yes the driver reloading sounds likely, I have also had some crashes where a blue screen comes up and says something like dumping memory to disk then it restarts the computer.

I am quoting this from the ati overclock thread
Quote:
(Note that your card may not artifact but may show other signs of instability such as Driver VPU recovers or hard locks. This is often the case with cards from the HD 5xxx series, which may not show artifacts but may cause the screen to flash and the driver to restart.)
This is what happened to me when i had my core clock to high either my drivers restarted or i get a blue screen and this sounds like the problem you had. You say it hangs at 890mhz but it does not at 880mhz looks like u have now found your stable overclock grats

Yeah I did read that, I actually had a little of both. Sometimes first artifacts appear then reloads the driver or does the memory dump thing, other times it will just reload the driver or do the memory dump.

I think I will just turn off the hardware acceleration in flash and call it good. Everything seams to work for my flight sim OK at the overclock settings I have now (890 and 1130). When I stress test the temperature stays between 84 and 85 degrees so I think I am OK there.

I read somewhere that overclocking reduces the life span of the video card, roughly how much does it reduce the life of the card?
