so my friend knows I want to build a server and he's had this server sitting in his apartment for god knows how long from a surplus sale. hes trying to get my to buy it for $250. is it worth it?

its a gateway 9520 t. has 2x dual core 3.0Ghz processors, 4gb ram, and 2 hotswap 700 watt power supplies. worth it?

how much would this run up my power bill?

You'd be surprised how LITTLE leaving these things on 24/7 does to your power bill.

Honestly, set your screens to sleep and if you're not using for constant access (file server etc) set it to hibernate or sleep.

I'd buy it for 250!!! Is he including a server operating system? IF so I'll take it!!! Lol

May want to lookup what CPUs you get. Xeon 5000 series can date back to the old netburst arch (50xx series).

What do you plan to do with the server? Do you just need a typical home server? If you don't need performance or reliability it is just a waste of power and more so I think you would have issues keeping it quiet enough to run in a home environment (if you care).

You might be able to resell it in parts for more than $250 too.

I find it hilarious that Gateway makes servers. "Hmm, we could go with Dell, HP or IBM... But no, let's get a Gateway."

I would find out specifically what generation the processors are from but for $250 it looks pretty good!

Dual core Xeons? That's certainly younger than the pair of single-core 3.06GHz "Gallatin" I used to run. How long did NetBurst last? Was it still in the Pentium D?

Found this. I'm guessing these are the processors you have.

$250 is a fair price for what you're getting.
