Is one of my 460's a glorified paperweight

post #1 of 17
Thread Starter

**disclaimer** this is not on my sig rig below, but on a rig built on a 770 mobo.

I just got an open box ASUS 460GTX from Newegg. It was recognized by Windows 7 with no difficulty. I upgraded immediately to the newest driver 266.58 with a clean install.

Started folding, everything was fine. Left it overnight...woke up and was getting core errors in folding (not my question...)...

It was at this point the hard locks started. I get maybe 10 minutes of use, then the system will hard lock, no BSOD, no black screen, no artifacts, just locks up. During the folding errors, I would see a "driver error" warning in the systray, but before I could investigate fully, I'd get a hardlock. My "give up" moment was last night when I was running Furmark @ stock clocks, and I got a hard lock after 4 minutes...

Is this the card, or should I start troubleshooting the rest of my hardware. Luckily I have an identical 460 waiting for me SB rig, so I can toss that on the 770, but if I get the same problem, what else could it be? PSU? MOBO? Drivers?

**added** I'm running an OCZ ModXStream 500W PSU on the above rig.

Test, if that fails it doesn't hurt to send them back.

I personally would never use furmark ive heard of it killing good cards.

Anyway i would re-install the drivers see how that goes,
And then if no hope test with your other parts. Are you certain the 460 is getting enough power?

@mike44njdevils,

I am not sure if this is applicable to your case, but I found it interesting:

This is probably open to debate, but the lack of artifacting/BSOD leads me to believe this may in fact be the case.

RUH ROH shaggy...I'll be keeping my eyes on this. Unfortunately, I can't test for another 8 hours.

Doubt it...the OCZ 500W units aren't exactly the best but they put out more than enough power to run a fairly-efficient card like the 460.

Your psu is enough for a GTX 460.
