Budget of 4,000$ USD - Page 2

If he knows how to put together a computer himself, and you don't, I guess you could get him the parts

I know I would be more stoked to get a box of awesome parts than a completed PC. Simply because this is my hobby, and I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to the actual building of the PC.

And yeah, if I lived anywhere near you, I'd be glad to help out putting it together

Photoshop isn't big on multi core processors(unless its cs5) it doesn't really take advantage of them. You will find that clock speed and memory bandwidth will be your best friends with these program. Are you including monitors in the price here or are they separate?

just a rough estimate on what you want. Not using the budget to its full potential

Intel Core i7 any of the sandy bridges
6 gigs of ram (triple channel)
If you can go with a big SSD for a hard drive that would be awesome for loading and applying filters.
Nvidia quadro for a gpu

Hate to say it, but if he is into alot of graphics. Maybe a mac is the way to go.

I know a little bit, but I can't build a computer from scratch. I know that his processor is a AMD and I know what INTEL is, and I know how to put in ram. But that's about it. I know nothing about technical specs/whatnot.

How savvy is he with hardware? I'm not your son, but I know if my pops years ago had handed me $4000 worth of pc prodcts, we would have taken over the living room for the weekend and built the thing on the spot.

Maybe something fun for you both to do together before he leaves the house.

Well from the looks of it you should order the computer from a company that pre-builts the parts you choose. You will 'lose' some money but if you don't know anything about building one, atleast it will work!

Sandy Bridge does not use triple channel memory.

I tend to agree, right now is not the best time to buy. I'd hold off till Mar/Apr. SandyBridge is about the best you can get right now, but there was a problem in the motherboards which is being corrected. That SB build similiar to mine or most of the ones around from start to finish will cost you roughly about $2000.
Although I think you son would love the new system, you might want to get him a book that would be worth 10x the cost of the system as well. I assume he is either still in High School or just started college.
George S. Clason "The richest man in babylon." pair that with the 2k system. After he has read the book and you if you have never read it. Give him the remaining ~2k and see if he can triple the money.

You could get more bang for your buck if you build your own. its not that hard to do and there are tons of tutorials.

Well here is a pre-built http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883227298

Suggestions of mine:
Processor: i7 950 / i7 2600K
Mobo: Something cheap unless you plan on overclocking
RAM: 4x2 GB DDR3 1600Mhz if you go with 2600K and 3x2GB 1600Mhz if you go with i7 950
Graphics card: HD 6870 or something.
