Here's what I think you should do- tell your son that you could not afford a birthday present this year, because money is so tight. Tell him you only got him a card. Give him a birthday card with a $4,000 check in it, and tell him to use it all to build his dream computer.

If your son is anything like me, having $4,000 to pick out and spend on his own parts would be much, much more awesome than buying him a pre-built computer. Like I said, I don't know if your son only built a computer once to try it, or if he really enjoys picking out and assembling his own hardware as I do. If you think he's anything like me, you should go with my idea!

Could do this.. but I already bought the monitor from amazon, unless there is a way to cancel it. But it's hard to give my son 4,000$ of cash... I don't know what he will do with all of it. He has good morals, so I trust him. But just the earier feeling of wasting it on something scares me.

Oh that monitor is amazing. You could give him that, and then give him a card with a check for the rest of the money to build a computer. It might be an even bigger surprise after receiving that super expensive monitor!

As I said, I don't know your son, but if he's anything like me, nothing will be wasted. Every cent of that money will be poured into making an awesome computer....and anything left over would be saved for future computer upgrades (but could possibly be blown on computer games, so it depends on your definition of "waste" ).

I suggest give him anough money for a proper kick ass pc. so he can build it himself.( around 2,500k )

Then treat him to something really special, like a father and son day out or something . I'm sure he would love it.

I dont have kids ( im 18 haha ) but thats what i'd do.

Hes moving out, a 4,000 computer isnt exactly what people need when they leave the home they grew up in. Give him the 4,000 and if he puts it to good use, then good for him. If he wastes it all on drugs, hookers, and gambling then thats his decision.

Sorry WannaBeOCer, but I do not want to spend 160$ on the case unless any other views on that case you linked?

-John
I understand, I picked that case because it has a lot of room to work with and provides efficient cooling. I believe you should ask your son what case he would like after you surprise him with the computer parts because after the build is finished he will only see a case.

I'll let you know what your doing wrong. Your spoiling him silly with a budget of $4,000 USD. A budget of $1500-$2000 and under will accomplish the same as a a $4,000 USD build. You can either consider an AMD Phenom X6 1100T build or a I7 2600K Sandy Bridge build for the budget that I outlined. As others have mentioned that $4,000 USD's can be spent elsewhere since he is moving out.

Additionally you posted in the wrong section. It should be under either Intel Build/Logs or AMD Build/Logs.

DON'T give him cash or a cheque. Sure you trust him, but money does strange things to people, and $4000 is a HUGE amount of money for an 18 year old.
Or, tell him you want to get him a computer. say he pick the parts you'll pay. no questions asked

Personally, I think the socket 1366 980x will be the fastest CPU for what he does.

EDIT: Or, as suggested, a 1090t will scream too.
