If it's for work with Cinema4D and Photoshop my advise is:

CPU: i7 970 ( $899.99 )
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X58 ( $189.99 )
Ram: 12Gb Corsair Vengeance ( $174.99 )
Main Harddrive: Corsair F120 x 2 Raid 0 ( $460 )
Secondary Harddrive: WesternDigital 1Tb Black ( $87.99 )
Graphic Card: GTX 580 3Gb ( $600 )
PSU: Corsair AX850 ( $189.99 )
Case: Silverstone FT02 ( $249.99 )
CPU Cooler: Corsair H70 ( $109.99 )

Total without monitor: $2,960 +-

As for monitor... you have a few options:

DELL U2711 ( great monitor ): +- $1,000
HP ZR30 ( Great great monitor ) : +- $1,300

My 2 cents
I agree with Pedros an i970 and a GTX 580 would be really nice!
The 580 may be a bit overpowered. I`m a Cinema 4d user and RAM+Graphic card isn`t
used by it extremely. But for the 3D rendering is a powerfull CPU a must.
8GB and a nice Card with 2GB RAM would do the job, even for that RAM hungry photoshop.
A nice SSD like all said would increase the fun.
Good Luck with your choice!
(GET THAT i 970!)

Ahhh, sorry.

The only 2 things I would change from PowerTrip's build is the cooler.

Change that to the NH-D14 instead, it's reasonable within the budget,
and you'll have the best Air Cooler on the Best processor.

And being picky, I would swap the PSU for the HX850, it's $155 AR:

Great build say go with this. However, you can afford it, so throw in another gtx580 That will match the graphics power a little bit better with the CPU power.

A photoshop machine build starts with the monitor - NEC, EIZO FlexScan S2433WH 24" at about $1000.

Next, a graphics card to drive the monitor at its native resolution. Some photographers claim ATI is better at that type of applications - around $300; Matrox cards are a higher end pro option.

You then want the RAM and the SSD to speed work up plus a HDD for backup

Raid0 2x Intel SSDSA2MH160G2R5 $820 + $100 1TB HDD or $150 for a server grade HDD Seagate Constellation LS. Some would claim SSD Raid0 is a waste of money... well, depends whom you ask

RAM: 12 GB of whatever fits the CPU and the mobo.

Mobo, to stay on top, should be an AMD AM3+ socket for the Orochi coming out in April - hopefully

To get the machine running until then, whatever AMD CPU fits the socket.

just a heads up the i7 970 has just taking a healthy price cut down to $590 from $900.

Your son would really benefit from the extra cores over the 950 you plan on buying.
