I would highly recommend you and your son sitting down and building it together. Actually now that you mention it, my mom helped my build my first custom system back in the day.

As for specifics, don't blow the whole $4K. You could build a smoking rig for half of that and still have $2000 left over for travelling or doing something else cool with your son before he moves out.

I'd look at a 1136 build in light of SB being temporarily down for the count.

Sorry, what does SB mean?

I will definitely talk to him next week when I get to see him......

He said he would help pay for the "mother boord" but, I kinda just went along with him and said okay yeah, i'll get what you want...

And now I'm here.

This is really frustrating, and the replies are to much to answer everyone's questions, I don't know what to do at the moment, Glad I have 23 Days left.

From the sound of it your son wants a physical powerhouse computer rather than a gaming computer (Which is what a lot of people here are suggesting)

Check your PMs, I messaged you.

Him wanting to pay for the motherboard (which tends to be one of the most expensive parts) most likely meant he wanted to build the system, as the motherboard is a specific part that goes into building a computer.

SB Is Sandy Bridge, intel's newest line of processors.. They had an issue with the release but Intel has put aside quite a bit of money to solve the problem and they are expecting the "re release" the product in March / April.

Most retailers have taken down their Sandy Bridge systems until its fixed because of this problem.

SB means sandy bridge, the newest version of the Intel core i7.

If you want the super computer, go with a dual Xenon setup with 4 way SLI

But pretty much, my son is turning 18 in 23days, he uses Cinema 4d, Photoshop/etc, and I Really want to get a nice computer for him, He currently uses a amd dual core 5600, with like 3Gigabytes of ram or something.

I Want this to be a surprise, and I have 4,000$ Saved up... for him, I just wanted to come here to post because It seems like this message board is big and alot of people know what there doing, so Why not.

Thanks -

John
Invest $2,000-$3,000 in a desktop, and $1,000~ on an IPS panel like the U3011, HP ZR30W, etc. Personally I would go for the U3011, it's the newer revision of the panel used on the HP ZR30W.

Here's a sample system from Maingear using Sandy Bridge, you can just add the monitor.

But going by your needs, maybe a dual Xeon/SR-2 build would be better, but it might be out of budget.

(for anyone wondering, I linked him to digital storm's site.. From what I've seen / experienced / heard they're generally on the better spectrum of things... *cough* ibuypower)

I can't recommend you a specific computer as EVERYTHING is customizable about their systems.. They will build to fit your needs.

Your best bet if you'd like to get him a pre built, ready to go computer is to find out what type of processor hes looking for (Ask him if he knows what "socket" or if its an "i7" or a "xeon" or anything)

Base the main computer you purchase from there off of the CPU he wants and build off of that. Hes most likely going to want a large amount of RAM and from what it sounds like (especially what he asked for) hes going to want an Nvidia GPU.

There are so many options its hard to tell you exactly what to get with such little info.

X3NIA, I am truly sorry for not providing alot of info... All I know and can remember he want's alot of "cores and ram" pretty much you already know that Im guessing. He doesn't play games at all, he makes intro's with a program called "Cinema 4d" and he uses a after effect program from Adobe.

I will pm you in a couple days, from the questions i will ask him and talk about it with him to get a better idea for sure.

Thanks again X3NIA.
