Workstation cards are a waste of money. Does he do this for fun or is this his career? Either way...

He said he wants to "SLI" these?

He just logged off msn, these are the links I copied and pasted from him, i'll talk to him more on saturday when I get to see him.

Well, there goes any chance of a 4000$ build. I'm not saying it wouldn't be awesome for him, I don't know much about rendering and stuff like that.. But 3000 for graphics card, 600 for motherboard, maybe 2000 for Xeons (CPU's) for it. Then add HDDs and all the other stuff + the fact that a 1000$ monitor like the Dell U3011 would be gold for someone like that.

I'm sorry to say, but surprising him, if he expects something close to a "dual processor + dual workstation graphics card" build, will be kinda hard with that budget...

I personally think he needs to scale it down just a little... :/

The workstation graphics cards are not necessary... while great and useful for some... I'm not sure that they'll be needed in his situation... there are hacks to get the consumer level cards to run the workstation drivers and have programs believe they are running the workstation varient... which is something to think about in and of itself.

Ok, if you insist on a 4k platform, here's how it should play out:

1) Get an extremely nice monitor. We're talking 30 inches here. I prefer not to do business with Dell, in light of their terrible customer service, so I suggest the HP, NEC (uber nice) or the DoubleSight models.

2) If you go with Sandy Bridge, get a PCI-E SSD. OCZ RevoDrive X2s are bootable, so are the Z-Drives, although the Z-Drives can get very pricey very fast. I'd suggest a 240gig revodrive X2 as the boot drive, and then tacking on some sata III 1 TB drives for storage.

3) Go with the 2600k. Bar none, its gonna be the best proc right now. If he cant overclock, get a 980x.

4) 3D and photoshop? No compromises, 24 gigs of ram. low timings > faster frequency. Loving the look of the Ripjaws revision- low volts at Cas 6- beastly!

5) Video card: OVERKILL IT. GTX 580s in SLI.

6) Mobo: Get something 3-way SLI capable. Make sure to leave room for the revo!

7) Case: 800D, Silverstone Raven, Lian Li Armorsuit, Thermaltake Armor. Those are your options. Nothing else can justify it.

plus you can't get two of those cpu's, the roughly equivalent dual cpu xeon is about 1700 each

So you're looking at what 4K for 2 cpu's and 1 motherboard. You still need the graphics card(s), memory, psu, case etc. The build he wants is more like a 10K build.

Just made a 4k build for someone.

I also have a decent dual Xeon build if you're interested.

I would honestly buy him something like what ShadeZero has and if he complains send him over here so we can explain to him that compromises can be made while still building a very nice rig.

And you did tell him this is equivalent to a medium size business server setup? You could buy a mode of transportation for 4,000. Is this a troll thread?
