[HD5870] FPS drop issue

Thread Starter
So, im playing tf2 at 100+ fps and it drops to 0~10 and get back to normal (100+).
Im using HD5870 (10.6 Driver) and the computer on my signature.

Also, my HDD's S.M.A.R.T says it has a problem. Is this really the HDD or the problem is in the video card ? Or maybe a driver problem..

Thanks you all ^^

Well I'm not too much of a HDD guru.

But I'll give this a shot.

Does this occur during any other games?
Have you tried newest or older drivers?

Only other thought I can bring up, is try out GPU-Z or MSI afterburner, and monitor your GPU usage and clock speeds during game play and if they drop out or have a similar spike during the FPS drop.

HDD shouldn't have an issue during a pre-loaded map.. Try loading TF2 if you can onto a portable hard drive or USB drive, if you can and running it off of that.

So if needed do a full install on the USB/Portable/Alternate Hard drive to elimate that.

This occurs rarely during other games.
Im trying the newest drive now, but it seems the problem hasn't been fixed.

I noticed a video card usage drop using msi afterburner, what it means ?

How long does it stutter for? Its it on a new map load? Any mods installed? Do you have any anti-virus software installed? I had this problem before and it was because the stats file on tf2 get updated a lot. All i had to do is add the tf2 stats folder as an exception of a scan and cured my problem.

It sounds like a power problem or possibly a ram problem.
