AMD Athlon II X4 640 unlocking and overclocking information and tips please!

Hey guys,

After burning my AMD Phenom II X4 945 out I bought a AMD Phenom II X6 1055T without reading that this chip is only 95TDW.
(My own foolish mistake!)

Due to the pathetic performance and low money at the momment, I have decided to opt for a AMD Athlon II X4 640 @ 3.0GHz.

My question to you guys is! ...

What can this processor be took up to in a stable good old fashioned overclock?

and...

What are the rumours about unlocking the L3 Cache to turn this chip into a Phenom II X4.

All helpful information and tips will be appreciated!

Kind Regards!

Kirk

Supposedly it was only when they launched as they were still based off the deneb die's but from what I hear now from other users is that they are officially on their own die now (Propus).

But with that I still hear about users unlocking their chips, though if they got the older ones or a new one was unclear.

Great budget chips either way you look at it

What's wrong with the 1055t 95w? You think it won't overclock just because it's only 95w? Especially on an ASUS Crosshair IV Extreme??!!

Please take a look at this.

@ 'tryagainplss' I have tried overclocking this chip, and I can take it upto 3.2GHz stable. But I am no 'hard core' overclocker. I would love to get this six core running at a insaine speed, but I simply don't know how, its very finaky!

So you think with my motherboard and RAM, I could get this upto 4GHz?

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Regards,

Kirk.

What's wrong with the 95w 1055T?

It achieves the same clocks as the 125w with less voltage, meaning less heat, and possibility of higher stable OC as it's also newer and refined a little more.

OC on a standard 640, you're looking at 3.6-4.0GHz or so, depends on the chip, Mobo and cooling.

The 1055T is a brilliant chip for the price, and OC's very well.

EDIT:- Okay, took me a few minutes to post, just saw your reply.

To be fair, you're gonna need to learna little more about Overclocking, as it's okay to get a chip with an unlocked Multi and all, but if you learn how to OC with a normal chip, you'll be better off anyway.
Plus, you'd need to learn the same to unlock/stabilise or OC the 640 anyway, it won't take as long to learn as you might think.

There's no reason you can't get 3.8 or even 4GHz+ outta the 1055T if you're lucky (just noticed you have a WC loop, nice!), have good cooling and know what you're doing.

I'd post links to some great OCing guides and chuck you a few pointers, but I'm babysitting for my sister and I've gotta send my Nephew to bed in a mo.

With that motherboard and RAM and your Water Cooling... You could probably get that to 4.4+ Ghz. I'm not sure though.

Since your hardware is not a problem at all..... Now all we need is a guide for overclocking a thuban..

EDIT: Found a guide.

That is pretty darn impressive! Your help on this would be outstanding. I get my motherboard and RAM back tomorrow afternoon and will be trying to get this chip overclocked. All the information would be fantastic.

@'EvoBeardy'
Thanks for you comment. I like the idea of the 1055T but it is performing no where near of the speeds that my X4 945 did. So really if I am going to keep this chip I need a good overclock.

I belive I know the basis of overclocking, and I did spend nearly £300 on a custom watercooling system so I know the cooling is more than upto the job.

After reading the reviews for the ASUS Crosshair IV Extreme board, and finding this to be the most exspensive on the market for AMD users, I opted for this board with overclocking in mind.

And with regards to your pointer's; any help will be fantastic, and bummer about the babysitting? haha.

Regards,

Krik!

FYI. The safe voltage of the 1055t is from 0.975 - 1.425. Any more than that you might be degrading your CPU.

And your MAX load temp is 55c. Don't exceed 55c, that shouldn't be a problem with water cooling
