555 unlock successful but...

Thread Starter
Is the voltage supposed to be 1.425v stock? I haven't touched it and that's what it's sitting at. This is my first time using an AMD build.

What I don't understand is, if all four cores work. Why did they sell it as a dual core? All I had to do was pay half price of a 955, press 4 to unlock all 4 cores and bam, a quadcore.

because they have pretty much perfected the manufacturing process and they have too much quad cores.

I don't know for sure, but when I booted it as a dual core with all of the voltages on default settings, the voltage was 1.4. I also thought that was really high, but I didn't try lowing it because I was going to overclock it anyway.

B55 @ 3.93GHz 1.485v now.

If your MB is upping the voltage on it';s own, It's because the chip is gonna require that voltage. I've heard of some of them unlocking and default VID's being 1.475V's. Mine stayed at 1.375, and is stable there till around 3.77ghz.

I'm no expert , but theres no good reason for a phII x4 to need that much at stock speeds.

I would look at listed voltages from the common x4 chips and choose a low one and try that, if it doesn't work , start raising it then.

Also, what does the MB have the CPU/NB set to?

THe issue with that is he is running an unlocked X2. Which would need more voltage if it was binned a X2 from not passing manufacturing specs. Apparently some are binned like that and some are just locked to cater to the budget aspect of the market.

cores were locked because to make a new dual core CPU, AMD locked defective cores from phenom II X4s.
but to meet the demand of dual cores, AMD might have locked some perfectly good cores.
it works like this
Phenom II 9xx series: fully functioning!
Phenom II 8xx series: defective L3 cache (-2MB)
Phenom II 7xx series: one 'defective' core
Athlon II 6xx series: 'defective' L3 cache
Phenom II 5xx series: two 'defective' cores
Athlon II 4xx series: one 'defective' core and L3 cache
Athlon II 2xx series: TRUE dual core with NO L3 cache
Sempy 1xx series: no L3 cache but can unlock a core

this is off the top of my head so if im wrong let mi know.

not sure if that is the case with every cpu....
i have had 9 phII 555's that all unlock stable to a quad
all at least overclock to 3800MHz on stock volts
all p95 stable for 8+ hrs. i believe that the process has probably been close to perfected, so all dies are not 'defective' as you say, but in fact given cpuid of lower end cpu to fill market with. i believe most if not all phII 550 and above are indeed non defective deneb die with parts disabled for sale purposes. this is only my opinion, so i may be wrong as well

I think it has to do with demand... amd lock the cores of a perfectly good quad just to keep up with the demand for dual cores. Having said that, when i unlocked my chip the voltage did not just like yours did, my volts stayed at 1.38 if i'm not mistaken and i got to 3.9ghz before i had to up the voltage.

But honestly i locked the other 2 cores because i have no use for them, so my chip in its 24/7 mode is what you see in my sig rig, it runs cooler and i can see my temps if i need to.
