Dad wants a build

Thread Starter
My dad gave me a call saying hes sick of his 2005 dell xps and finally wants to custom desktop.

Purposes: GAMING, he has a high tolerance for lag but i want a build that will be perfect for current games and be able to play some future ones.

Budget: Below $1000 would be nice, $800 or so would be nice too.. not too strict though

Needs: Everything but mouse, keyboard and monitor.

He Already has: Loads of games, keyboard, mouse, and is using a 42 inch samsung 1080p Tv as his monitor.

Anyways try to come up with something!! i know some of you love to do this. O and for the case, i would like it too look nice and sleek.. and be full tower, I want to keep it cheapish maybe a lower lian li or so, and it doesnt need too many fans

Oh good something to pass the time. What's a time frame on this? Would a sandy bridge build work or is he not willing to wait until after the new boards come back?

Time frame, well hes in no extreme rush but it would be nice to buy his build soon, hes getting sick of playing dead space 2 at 14fps. A build good enough for crysis 2, elder scrolls skygrim, battlefield 3 and all that would be great
I would say a sandy bridge would work fine, he doesn't need total top of the line stuff just the best bang for buck. He never told me a price limit, im just assuming its under $1000, he told me to find him a build.

Here is a build I just threw together. Assuming a 2500k and any $200 sandy bridge motherboard and it comes to about $1050. You can drop $100 off by getting a 560 instead of a 570.

Lookin good! i think a 570 will suit him well, only things i might change..

850w psu, because i want him to be able to sli his gtx 570 if he ever needs too.

Full tower case, maybe a cheaper lian li or so, i want the build to be fast for me and not have to deal with a small case with cramped cable management.

Maybe triple channel ram.. 6gb

Other than that ill just have to figure out what mobo and cpu

No triple channel on SB. If you only have $1000 then I wouldn't get a lian li, too much of the budget if you ask me get a cheap SSD instead or better gpu

Ahh i just read up about that.. ive been out of the loop for a small time.

Honestly, he may be willing to pay 1500 for the build, i dont know. Ill just suggest one to him and see if hes fine with it. Im not too worried about ssd for him though.

Well the manufacturers are saying April for the new SB mobos. If you can wait that long its definitely best bang for buck.

Personally I'd go for 8GB ram instead, but the suggested build otherwise looks good.
Don't forget an aftermarket CPU cooler. The CM 212+ is pretty cheap and works well.

Cases are a personal preference, so get your dad to pick one that he likes. You're looking at full towers? Best ones for air include the CM HAF series, ATCS 840, and Lian Li A70F all in the same price range.
