[NYT] U.S. Pushes for Nuclear Power, Regulators Lagging - Page 2

Also, France gets like 74% of its power from nuclear. No flaming France, cuz they're doing fine with it.

EDIT: Didn't see the earlier mention of France, I don't want to insinuate they have a magic fix for nuke waste.

They also have Two-Hundred Nukes ready to go so I really hope they don't place their Croissant on the big red button.

Why don't like nuke the middle east then dump all the nuclear waste there? The entire world would benefit

No one really knows how far off we are from being able to completely remove ALL radioactivity from the waste but it's too big of a potential issue to just put to chance.

Imagine going to nuclear as our main source of power for 100 years and in 100 years having ALL those barrels but still no way to remove the toxicity. Do you understand how many barrels you'll already have? The US's entire stockpile plans are only built out 100 years into the future and the barrels stay radioactive from anywhere from 10,000 to 1,000,000 years.

To me, the whole idea of nuclear extremely short sighted.
Actually all it takes are new reactor designs like a Traveling wave reactor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveling_wave_reactor

Unlike light-water reactors (LWRs), TWRs can be fueled at the time of construction with enough depleted uranium to produce full power for 60 years or more

The fail lack of thought for your post is staggering . . . I will leave it at that.

While I personally would LOVE for this idea to become a reality, it is still in its conceptual phase. Banking all of human civilization on one of these is like banking on cold fusion. They're both bound to happen one day but until that day happens you can't assume anything.

Having said that, new reactors can use the waste of old reactors for fuel.
Like I said, no problem. Just have to put more effort and work into getting the designs finalized.
This is true but the reactors currently out can only reduce the radioactivity, not eliminate it. As stated above, there are TWRs in design right now that could completely eliminate the radioactive issue for us, but until one is built and working, it would be stupid of the human race to put all of its eggs in one basket.

I see your edit but i'd still like to mention again that while France gets the vast majority of it's power from nuclear, they are set to run out of room in around 100 years. If the world used nuclear like france did, it would not be inconceiveable that we would run out of safe places to store it in anywhere from 200-500 years. While that is far beyond what anyone in here is likely to live, it is still a short-term fix that produces 1,000,000 year problems.

Why not just dump the waste on other planets?

If we haven't found out how to deal with radioactive waste in one hundred years, I will be quite disappointed in my species. And the clock started on June 27, 1954, so considering how much we've slacked off, we've got a ways to go to catch up!

Don't worry guys, just keep using Australia as a dumping ground, it's all good.

What about me? The end user and my electric bill? Will nuclear directly drive it down? I guess I'm sparked by the fact that apparently GAS IS SO CHEAP according to the article. Well my electric bill has NEVER gone down in the cost per kWh.

Someone tell us that nuclear will be cheaper in that way and the public will want it.

There are a few different designs being thrown around, so it's not just one design that the scientific community is banking on. Currently the petroleum our civilization is using causes much more damager per year then the nuclear waste that is being stored. We don't have a way to clean up all of the solution petroleum releases when burned, should we stop using all internal combustion engines? IMO nuclear power is a stop gap until fusion power is a reality.

Is there a link to an article that states France is running out of room to put nuclear waste?
