Hey guys, I'm looking for some opinions on whether I should look to trade my 2x EVGA GTX285's for 2 ATI HD5870's. I understand that I would have to add about $100 out of my pocket for the two cards. I mainly play BFBC2, TF2, and the likes. I'm looking forward to BF3 as well. I have an EVGA 780i motherboard and 1000w psu. I have a 22 inch Dell monitor (1680 x 1050, DVI) and a 40 inch Sony TV (1080p, HDMI) hooked up to my computer. I mainly use the monitor, and only use the TV to watch movies off my PC. One thing worth noting is that both of my cards are under the lifetime EVGA warranty. The 5870's will be DX11 capable for BF3, but I've read some stories of ATI, and particularly crossfire, not playing well with BFBC2/the Frostbite engine. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well I just bought the 580's and have been playing with the 5870's in CF and TRI. I can honestly say that I didnt realize what good was till I played BC2 with my 580. It is much smoother and get 100-120 FPS with just the one 580.
Needless to say I am selling my three 5870's.
I would take the 5870's over the 285's, but I would rather have a 580 over all of them!

I had crossfired 5850s(sold one off recently)...and had no issues with BC2...however at 1680X1050 resolutions.. I would probably keep your 285s unless you wish for DX11 features...

IDK what you get now in BC2, below are my QX9650 CFX5870 BC2 results.

Attachment 194836

BTW that's 1600*1200

And as far as ATI having an issue with the FB engine, I don't see it.
My current set up blazes through at 80-200fps.

Thanks for the replies so far!

grunion: I can run Crysis at 1680x1050 very high settings and it's more than playable, but for the life of me I can't get BFBC2 to run smoothly. What resolutions were those numbers at? Also, is your processor at stock clocks?

And assuming that I get the 2nd card immediately, the cost for a new motherboard is something else that I would have to factor in. I was looking at some intel chipsets for sale and they seem reasonable. Considering that I need a new motherboard, I'm probably better off keeping the GTX 285's aren't I? I mean the only game that refuses to run nicely at maxed out settings at 1680x1050 is BFBC2. Console ports...go figure.
