can't alter CRT Refresh Rate in XP in certain games

So I put together some old parts (dating from 2007) so I could play some old Half Life games. Being a former competitive player I am a stickler about getting it just right. I used this same CRT for years and always had it set to 100hz so I know it's capable.

I'm currently running XP SP3 on an 8800 GTX. Just installed the latest drivers, 266.58.

All the old "RefreshForce" type programs dating from the early 2000's don't work. I tried PowerStrip, it doesn't hold the forced settings when I load the game, it always reverts to the painful 60hz. Most research yields answers for Vista and Win7 systems but not XP.

I'm at my wit's end. What can I do to get this thing to stop forcing 60hz when I get in game?

Go into the resolution settings, advanced, monitor, and there you should be able to change the refresh rate of the monitor. CRT or otherwise.

which games are you playing...

there may be a way to set the refresh rate in the game itself

Yes, right now, on the desktop, I'm enjoying the eye-pleasing 100hz refresh rate I'm used to. As per the settings you mentioned. Despite these settings it still reverts to 60hz in Half-Life and all related mods. There isn't an option to edit it within Half-Life/mods, yes vsync is disabled but it's still painful to stare at and frame-tearing galore.

The game i'm playing is natural selection, a half life mod. It's truly unplayable without a higher refresh rate... i'm raging over this. There used to be numerous homebrew programs that would fix this, such as "NVRT", RefreshForce, and others, but they're years old and no longer support the newer drivers. None of them work. It's pathetic that the game (which is OpenGL btw) still can't be edited to a custom refresh rate.

If anyone has any ideas, i'm desperate

r_displayrefresh "x". With this you can force a specified refresh rate. Replace x with the desired refresh rate you want to use, e.g. 85. Don't set it above your monitor refresh rate though or you may damage your monitor.

Make a short cut and put that after the command eg. "C:\\Halflife\\Halflife.exe - r_displayrefresh "100" "

tried it, both from a desktop shortcut and within the steam browser that lets you add those custom parameters

Just as in the past (I've always used nvidia cards), it did absolutely nothing

Just installed Nvidia System Tools (formerly nTune), even in the custom profile for the game (from within the nvidia control panel) there is no option to edit a refresh rate setting.

Alright, after trying a half dozen programs including the ususally never-fail PowerStrip, I found one that does what it's supposed to

RefreshLock

Fed up of getting 60Hz or 75Hz in your favourite OpenGL/Direct3D/DirectX games (e.g. Quake 1/2/3, Half-Life, Unreal, or Deus Ex) instead of the 120Hz your display adapter & monitor are capable of? Yes? Then download this FREE program, and enjoy higher display frequencies without the hassle of installing special drivers!
Fantastic! If some some google search string leads someone to this forum post it will have been worth it.
