SB Gurus! Overclocking 2600K with 16GB RAM

Thread Starter
Hi, first post smile.gif

To those in the know regarding SB - do higher oc's with four sticks of RAM require tinkering for memory performance and stability, i.e. slightly higher volts and VCCIO?

I would assume not, considering the BLCK is fixed at 100.

Four sticks of Corsair CAS8 1600Mhz, manually set to 1.5v, 8-8-8-24 2T as per spec.

The reason: currently clocked at 4.4Ghz, with 1.315v under load. Rock solid (P95, LinX etc.). This system is unstable with 4.5Ghz however, even with 1.35v.

I'm not really fussed about the 100Mhz difference, just curious; limited chip, or user error? I was wondering whether the RAM was anything to do with it, but wasn't convinced it was being put under more strain due to consistent BLCK.

Vcore: 1.315
LLC: Ultra High
PLL Overvolt: Disabled (tried enabled)
Phase: Extreme
Duty: T.Probe (tried Extreme)
VRAM: 350
CPU PLL: 1.71 (tried Auto, 1.675 stable also)
PCH: 0.95 (tried Auto)

Any ideas would be very much appreciated smile.gif

I find that you're fine if you keep your black below 103, anything higher than that seems to conflict with stability. I'd recommend you try lowering the timings on your memory. Once I did that my overclock was a lot more stable.

I ran my cpu at 4.6 at around 1.20 -1.28 volts depending on the load.
(-0.015 volts over the stock voltage)
Black was at 100.3 (I find this works best)
Ram's stock voltage is 1.65v with stocks timings at 9-9-9-24-2T
I changed this 1.54 volts at 8-8-7-20-1T

Check out this page to give you idea of what your settings should be at - http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/39184-p67-sandy-bridge-overclocking-guide-beginners.html#post110576

Obviously it takes a few days to work out a stable overclock, good luck

I have the same kit, only one though. I'm finding the sticks are very fussy, and passing prime blend 1hr is proving to be tough. It's a slow process, but process of elimination is the way I'd recommend. You could have a dud of a chip, but more than likely an average chip can do 45x easily with 1.35. Try setting 1.35Vcore in BIOS and see how far you can go with multi & two sticks at 2T. Once you get where you are happy with the chip, add the other two sticks.

One thing of note, you said you have VDIMM set to 1.5V in BIOS, may be undervolted a little. On my mobo I had to set it to 1.55V in BIOS and ended up with a 1.524V reading in windows.

I haven't seen this kit respond to voltage at all. Looser timings it really seems to like. I've got the 2x4GB CL8 kit at DDR3-1866 @ 9-10-9-27 @ 1.52V and so far it appears to be stable in prime blend.

Getting a 5 GHz overclock at 1.2 volts seems impossible.

They are using the wrong version of CPU-Z if I recall correctly.

Philly - idle 32*C, load 68*C.

Thank you very much ugotd8 & ehpexs for the advice. I'll try 100.3. Also read that 101 is good to try (1Day's recommendation I think).

ugotd8, I hadn't considered running the RAM at 1866. I'll start with two sticks and settings similar to yours and see where that takes me. Have you tried 1T by any chance?

"Even 1.35" seems wrong.

Take it to 1.4, nay 1.425v.

This is why I asked the question: limited chip or user error? smile.gif

Many chips seem to go to 4.8 to 5Ghz at 1.4ish, which is why I wondered if 16GB ram was causing instability.
