Most ideal upgrade path from LGA775 for little cash.

Thread Starter
Alright, so I'm helping a friend out, with upgrading. We're trying to decide the ideal upgrade path for his gaming rig. Right now he has a Intel Wolfdale dual core and HD4770.

At first we thought a Phenom II 955 BE and GTX460.

But then, we thought further down the road (with the re-release of Sandy Bridge and Bulldozer coming) & thought maybe holding out on a CPU and motherboard upgrade & getting a GTX560 + hard drive right now, and getting one of the new chips later this year. Obviously, the CPU will heavily bottleneck the card right now, but it'll balance out with a new chip.

Thoughts and idea's?

I would suggest you get a Q9550/9650 and get a decent GPU till Bulldozer comes out. Then you could think about getting either bulldozer or sandyb on seeing the performance. Even a Q6600 will be a decent upgrade if you can find one.

yea all these people who say wait a few months are just broken records,

I would say upgrade to 1156, get a good priced used 750/760 with a mobo from the market here on OCN and buy a gtx 460 this will be your best bet

What Wolfdale processor?

If it is an E6750 or better then I'd just get a GTX460 and wait for IB.

If you want to, find a Q6xxx, Q9x50, Q9x00 or Q8x00 as per what the mobo will allow. As for gaming, the GPU should still be the primary focus for upgrading... then upgrade the rest.
