Alot.

Dual Cores are fading away, all new games use 4 cores basically. Your budget isn't enough.

If you try to upgrade your motherboard on that budget along with CPU and GPU you won't get far. What I'd do is up your budget and get a nice mATX H55 with i3 and DDR3 set used here on the forums (make sure to get a cooler, often you can have CPU sellers include the stock HSF for the price of shipping or spring for a better one right away). They overclock like a wonder and are very fast. Then later you can upgrade your GPU once you get more cash. You might not have the best gaming rig right off the bat but your money would be much better spent in the long term.

The only thing I need to warn you about is a non-standard connector for the front panel on most prebuilt computers. Custom cases have universal connectors and prebuilt ones don't. You'll need to look at the pinout and change it to whatever your new motherboard needs. I was prepared to do that with one customer's HP with an old AMD Sempron which got a DDR3 and Athlon II X4 makeover, but the MSI motherboard happened to have the same pinout. Don't count on that though.

Alright guys.. well let's just say I want to upgrade mobo, CPU, RAM, and video card.

-quad core CPU (maybe around 2.3 GHz)
-3 gigs of DDR3 RAM
-maybe a GTX 450?
-and a mobo to go along with it

would it be cheaper to go the AMD way? and

How much would all this cost?

AMD are cheaper than Intel, I would recommend a tri-core AMD CPU and unlock it to quad core, how are you going to get all that good stuff with only $200??

The cheapest tri-core CPU is this:

and that has really bad cache.

go to newegg and make an acount, start clicking on components and then do a google search on each part, see what rates well and what your budget allows. Create a wishlist.

Build it and post a screen shot here. you wil gets lots of help if you do some of your own work first.
