Should I mount case fans with zip ties question - Page 3

post #21 of 28
What I was getting at is even the plastic zip ties usually have a metal wire in them, and when twisted and un-twisted enough times they tend to break apart. I have even seen ones that look fine just to have a section of wire fall out of one end while using it... That worries me.

The thing that I am most afraid of when working on computers is not frying a part, but rather causing un-known damage to a specific chip or circuit, something that could go un-detected till your data starts corrupting or sound is garbled, video corrupts, random BSOD.. you get the idea.

Ummm, Plastic Zip Ties don't have a Metal Wire in them, , Also you zip or tighten " zip ties " or "Cable Ties" .

You are most likely refering to "twist ties"

Cheers Jason

I have a twist tie that's been used for 3+ years not one broken metal bit on it.. I've also had my glass's nose cushion on my mobo metal side down without issue too.

Yes!!! FTW!!! +rep

That said, try Velcro:

Those 80mm fans are Velcro'd to the top of the DVD:

But see that lower front fan? It's held in with Nexus vibration isolators - the best. But when I got this case it had little screw holes that were designed for machine screws. So I drilled them out to fit vibration isolators:

(I also ripped out that HD cage that blocked so much air, but that's OT.)

See item 6 in my sig for stuff about Velcro. I use it to fasten my SSD and the transformer for my CCL.

Thread Starter
@ehume,

your HDD's are standing up, did you do that or is that how the case is? How did you hang the fans on top with velcro?

I removed the HD cage because it blocked airflow. Those HD's are seated in the end holders that stabilize retail Seagate Barracudas in their boxes. You get two per box.

The 80mm fans are Velcro'd to the top of the DVD player. That's their sole attachment. They aren't hanging from anything. When you put Velcro on a fan, you stick opposing pieces to it. That gives the fan a sticky bottom. Now all you do is splat it down where you want it to go.

In case if you're wondering, I've used zip ties for case fans with no problems at all. It's only a bit of a pain if you try to take them off, otherwise I fully recommend it.
