Dusted pc, now my second gpu doesnt work??

Okay
I have an MSI NF-980-G65 mobo and I run (2)GTS 250 on SLI
So my computer bugged out and froze. So I restarted my computer and the display didn't work. I shut the computer off and then noticed it was a bit dusty. So I started to dust my PC and removed my GPUs cleaned the fan and after I was done replaced everything to its original place.

Now when I turned on the computer the display wouldn't work so I messed around with the plugs and tried every slot until my monitor turned on. It turned out the computer switched to the on board gpu on the mobo. After a couple of minutes uninstalling and reinstalling everything and getting the display to work on the GTS 250 I realized that the option the SLI was gone.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers about a dozen times. I turned off the computer and unplugged the GPUs to make sure that they weren't damaged. They were fine. I took them out and reinserted them to make sure they were plugged in correctly. I even switched them around. I found that the GPU only reads on the first slot. My friend suggested maybe the second slot was dead, but the second GTS 250 runs and everything it just doesn't show up on HWMonitor or show up in my NVidia control panel. I've checked online any everything pretty much says it's a simple plug and play type of deal.

Any suggestions anyone?

I would try running driver sweeper to make sure the drivers are completely out. Then reinstall them.

MSI motherboards are absolute crap too though.... so the possibility of a bad slot or motherboard issue would not be surprising.

I forgot to mention i did the driver sweeper to remove everything.
Anyway found out it was a dead slot. I moved one my gpu's to a third slot that was hidden right below my first one. Now they can keep each other warm in the long winter nights. ugh dead pci-e slots ***
Thanks for the replies!

This would probably not be an issue with lower end cards but the lower slots are usually 8x and do not give you the full bandwidth of pci-e. Might want to run some benchmarks to make sure your still getting good frames.

The difference between x16 and x8 is less than a few %..
Nothing to get shaken up about..

Ninja edit Okay I really gotta go to bed this time.

You may have gotten dust in that second slot and that could be causing the card to not register... Try taking a Q-tip, and using Isopropyl alcohol, wipe out the contacts in there. When you're done with wiping, blow the slot out with canned air. Then, for the sake of having no doubt, repeat... Finally, let it dry off thoroughly, and see if it works.

This same problem has happened with a few others on here and other forums, and a simple slot cleaning worked for a surprisingly large amount of them, so with a little bit of luck, yours might be all right .

Best of luck to yah,
