Think I can farther?

Thread Starter
I recently upgraded my computer with a ASUS M4A79XTD EVO, Phenom II x2 565, and 8 gigs G. Skill DDR3 1333 8-8-8-21. I have my multi at 20 and the HT at 202 for a 4040mhz clock with voltage at 1.5125 in BIOS but in the ASUS monitoring utility it sits around 1.53 highest and 1.52 lowest. I'm about 45min into the stress test right now and all is well. I've tried 20.5 and increased volts to 1.525 but the ASUS utility said 1.55 and it was still crashing. Also tried 19.5 and 208-211 but crashed on all of thoughs. I'm new to OCing, and want a 24/7 stable clock. Right now my temps are at 37*c and holding running Prime95 with a Zalman 9700 cooler. What's highest safe voltage for a 24/7 clock? I've heard 1.5 and others say 1.55, anyone know for sure?

I'm also looking to get the timings down on the ram, is there any stress tests for just memory to ensure they're running properly with adjusted timing? Where do I start first on lowering them? I'm assuming the CAS, but not sure. I had manually set the timings and speed to what they are now.

Off topic but looking into upgrading to either a 5850 or 6850, which would you go with? Only going to run one card as my PSU wont handle 2 of them, Rosewill 750w.

IMO the max for AMD K10/Intel Nehalem is 1.6v for 24/7 OC..

Use Memtest86 for the memory.

i would grab a 6870 or 6950 IF you can afford. but out of those two i would choose the 6850 due to better tessellation and driver support.

I should have mentioned I don't want to spend over $200 on a new card.

Thanks for the recommendation of memtest86.

I still like Prime95, will usually show rounding errors pretty quickly when RAM timing is poor.

Just my personal preference, but if your ASUS board has a LLC setting, 19% works pretty good for getting those vCore swings under control. Its going to move a little bit anyway though.

O, and keep the HTT Link speed @ or near 2GHz, always. If you've OC'd it, put it back. Nothing but trouble there.

I failed prime95 at the 6hr 31min mark with the msg saying returned 0.4 looking for 0.5 or greater, something like that anyways. Is this the rounding error you speak of or something different?

The HT is sitting at 2020 roughly and swings under that sometimes, think that'll be fine or pull it back to 1800mhz?

Just tried to run prime95 again and failed at the 8min mark same error msg. Core #1 both times, Core #0 still keeps on running though.

I think you should keep your HT around 1800MHz. Is Prime95 failing after you lowered your ram timings?

I think thats a rounding error. I'm going from memory here, I havent seen a Prime error in a while. In general, Prime errors with no crash/bsod is RAM, total crash or bsod is CPU. Thats been my experience.

HT @ 2020 should be ok. If you tweak and end up at ~2100 or greater, drop the multi a step.

A tiny bit more voltage on the RAM and/or CPU/NB could stabilize this.

I like stabilizing my CPU OC before I worry about RAM and NB. Then I know exactly where my problems lie, usually.

The rounding errors are from ram, if it was the cpu you would get a physical memory dump. I know that most pII's don't like the multi much higher than 18.5-19. Try to up the voltage a touch on your ram, and CPU\\NB. Another thing that will help is raising the NB freq. to around 2800. Helps with stability a lot.
Do you have any intentions in unlocking that thing man?!?! Lots of performance boost!!!

I thought about unlocking it but decided not to and bought a board with out the unlock feature and now I wish I would have paid $50 more for an unlocking board. Oh well, at least with 2 cores it keeps the temps down

I will try the NB voltage bump and or ram voltage. Ram is running 1.5 on auto settings and it's only rated for 1.65 max. Here's a link to the ram I bought on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231180 People in the reviews say they've OC'ed it to 1400 stable so I had high hopes for it.

Thanks for all the help so far
