Remove Win7 from HD But Keep Everything Else?

Thread Starter
Hi. I am building a new PC, and plan on using a SSD to booth windows and run some of the more demanding games. The problem is, I have a 1TB Sata HD from my old build with everything on it, which I want to use as storage.

Is there any way to remove Windows7 from the 1TB sata drive, but keep everything else that's on there?

You could partition your HDD and move the files. But there should be no need. Load windows onto the SSD and have HDD hooked up once windows is loaded. Boot the SSD, Share the HDD and have access to all your files. However if you want to wipe the HDD I recommend shrinking the volume, moving files to new space, delete the OS partition, expand the recently created partition for the files.

Now you are using the HDD as a file drive.

Though remember to move your save files that may be in the appdata folder for some games.

If it was me I would -
Disconnect HDD
Connect SSD
Install Windows
Connect HDD
On HDD make new folder named Delete
Move everything in there
Start picking at it little by little

Okay thanks. It was only after I made the thread that my brain went 'hang on, couldn't I just manually delete it?'. I suppose there was the slight worry that, like manually deleting a game, there would be traces left behind that could upset everything.

Just out of interest, if I plug my HD into my new PC, could I play the games right away, or will I need to reinstall them? I usually install them to their default directories (C:/Program Files (x86)), but would there be something missing on the SSD?

If its on Steam you do not need to reinstall it, and if your missing any files to play it will just download what ever is missing.
Other games may require some components from the initial install so it varies, but most likely you will be able to play right away.

So really I should just try it and see, and if they don't work reinstall?
