The reason that RAM overclocking does not benefit is pretty complicated.... CPUs have more cache now for one... memory controller design.... other system bottlenecks.... application memory usage....

Memory revisions are also about power consumption, density, and signalling... not just clock speed.

I/O is a major bottleneck. Put the money you save from not going crazy on RAM towards an SSD or at least high end HDD.

I agree - performance is hindered partially by IO, but even more by bloatware that sucks out the CPU.

I'm pretty sure this is the fault of the memory controller, on Sandy Bridge it's well developed and allows for a lot of bandwidth.
Nevertheless, I shall continue to suggest 1600 CL9 RAM over all generic 1333 CL9 RAM simply because it is in fact cheaper as it always is.

And I consider 4FPS in x.264 a pretty big difference being a video encoder myself.

Note that's only a 4% difference.... Going with 1600MHz RAM and a better CPU or heatsink would probably be the better investment.

I paid $100 for my memory, I had the choice of either 8GB of 1600 for $120 or this. Obviously 16GB is overkill for most users, but I'll still take double the ram over a slight performance increase and pocket the $20.
