Well as mentioned already most tv's don't have that great of sound - mostly b/c 90% of the time it'll be paired to a AVR unit and external speakers.

The wierd sound you're probably referring to is like a hallway tinny sound - since most speakers in flat pannels are downward or rear facing for thinness or cosmetics. My lna750 lcd has a little sub build in too like 2 or 3", which helps with sound but still leaves much to be desired. Our LG 42" in the bedroom actually sounds decent with zero destrortion at higher volumes.

Best thing to do is test/demo the TV's at the store, not only for picture quality but for audio. Play with the settings and go to a store that you can ensure the tv is displaying the same source and hook up (ie: not showing blueray through composite cables).

Generally when i was in the market (2 yrs ago), many sources rated picture quality the following - most rating are based on color correction options and black levels, so can't expect the tv to have the same panel and processors in all models.
Plasmaioneer (now out of the game - so sad), panasonic, samsung...
LCD: Samsung, LG, Sony...

Another option is if you are happy with your tv and only want better audio, then pick up a cheap (even used) 5.1 receiver, and get some decent speakers.
Even the "white van" 3k speakers for $50.00 specials would be leaps better then your tv speakers.

I'll warn you now though, Home theatre is a slippery slope, it's easy to get into the "for a little bit more i can get this..." mentality
