Sandy Bridge Turbo duration, increase TDP limits?

Thread Starter
I've noticed my cpu is going out of turbo mode every once in a while in Prime. Initially everything is fine but after several minutes it sometimes goes back to non-turbo voltages and speeds for a second, then goes back into turbo again.
Somewhere I found that I could increase long term and short term TDP power limits in my bios so I set long term to 150 and short term to 180. There was a long time timer and a max. current setting per core as well but I've left those on auto hoping not to hit the ceilings there

Prime blend on 50° tops sounds like my cooling can keep up so its not thermal throttling itself I'd say.

Long story short, does it make sense to increase those limits further or do I need to look elsewhere?

Disable Turbo, disable the power saving features, and overclock that bad boy.

Don't do this. If you disable turbo your max multi will be 33.

I tried playing with those settings at one point, but it didn't buy me anything. I can't really speak to what's "safe", but TBH if you let your CPU is pulling that much wattage you're going to suck that 480W PSU dry.

And from what you're describing, it might actually be the long-term settings you need play with. If it's happening after a few minutes in prime.

Sadly not possible. Only option to OC is via Turbo. The base multiplier is locked to default by the mainboard.

Heh overlooked your Post TriBeCa, sorry. I'll try the long term settings a bit to see if anything changes later. If that doesn't change anything, maybe its time to test things with that 1kW Antec PSU that was supposed to go elsewhere.
I just wonder if it is even safe to set the limits even higher but then again, temps are okay and other people are running way more Vcore.

Sounds like you are describing CPU throttling, when prime puts enough load on your cpu (watts) and exceeds the BIOS setting for said wattage, your CPU's multiplier is throttled down to bring the load wattage under your BIOS setting. I have mine set at 125w long and 135w short.

As others have said this is a turbo overclock so disabling it is not an option. You can try to disable Spread Spectrum and intel Enhanced Speedstep. This might help.

Also, if you are throttling, you can try to lower the CPU PLL Voltage (not vcore!) to 1.75. That should help with temps.

I've just found how the board handles this max TDP limits by setting long term watt to 95 and long term duration to 5 seconds.
In Prime that Limit is of course exceeded immediately so after 5 seconds the multiplier is reduced from 46 and alternates somewhere around 42-43 but not down to non-turbo 34. It's not going back up to 46 either so the behaviour is totally different.

Then I've raised the limit to 150 with 5 seconds duration. Right now its running prime blend at 4,6ghz while I type so I'm not hitting the set limit at all. As you say you have your limit at 125 @ 1.4Vcore I'm probably not even close
The short limit is said to be in milliseconds so that's not it either.
I have absolutely no clue what I could set for this "maximum primary plane current" but I doubt I'm hitting that either.
From what I see it's either the wonky bios or the board itself that's doing this.

PLL voltage settings are not available on this bios (hopefully soon) so I can't try that. Now if only I could find this watt-meter that I had lying around somewhere. I'm curious how much % I'm roughly using from my PSU. I'm somewhat lazy to untangle this utterly cramped case and replace the PSU with another one.

*edit* Found the watt-meter. According to this, the whole thing is drawing 104W @ win7 idle
305W @ furmark
405W @ furmark + Prime Blend
227W @ Prime Blend
all things warmed up of course, power consumption while cold is like 10-20W lower and slowly increases. Vcore voltage is staying rock solid at 1.35V even at full load so the PSU is gritting its teeth but keeps up
