I have to buy Windows 7?! - Page 2

Legally speaking, if you didn't bought the Windows license together with the rest of the hardware, you now have to buy a Retail license to your system. but if the point is to have a genuine license working, and not the legal question, you can buy any OEM license and use it.

What is the deal with the Dell's OS disk? have you tried to install OS with it?

WOW, really? Does everyone really expect everything for free? This whole post is ridiculous. I hate giving MS money all the time too but everyone should do the right thing. If you are a "professional" though, purchasing an Action Pack from MS is a great way to get just about everything at a decent price. It's pretty nice $300 a year and all 9 computers in my home office and my server are legit. Not to mention that Office and other MS software is legally installed on all of them.

Back to the point though. Buy an OEM copy from NewEgg for $99 and quit crying. Do the right thing. Or if you are a student, get the "Ultimate Steal."

You probably can't use your Dell disc, but if you can find a clean OEM/Retail install disc of the same version the license sticker on your Dell will probably work.

You can always buy a Technet subscription from Microsoft and get Office, VS 2010, and Windows for $180.

No, actually most people do buy Windows 7.

Name another piece of software that you depend on that you run 24/7, that runs with little to no bugs, that you will use for the next 3-5 years. Just pay them up; heck your GPU cost more then the OS, and will you be 100% sure you will use it for the next 3-5 years?

I believe in Open Source software, just like every lasst one of you should, including most of humanity... The fact that Microsoft even charges for their insecure crapware is truly an insult to the founders of modern software. So in spirit of that, get Ubuntu

Or if you do happen to get 7, don't buy the version with Office on it, huge waste of money. Just download Open Office, an open source software package . As it is (in my opinion) better than microsoft's crap... Essentially it is the same exact programs (functionality wise), and can even open, edit, and save in MS's formats, but it has so many special features (such as being able to save in pretty much any format you wish) that it out does MS at everything they only wish they could be. To say the least, it rocks.

... Or if that doesn't suit you, you could be like half the people on these forums and acquire it from other "methods" .. But that's not condoned here.. sooo Gl dude

Do whatever saves you the most money

No it's not. You call up Microsoft, tell them your motherboard died and you replaced it, and they will reactive it for you. You can do this an unlimited ammount of times, as long as the OEM key is NOT being used on two machines at once.
