Odd Power Loss??? HX650 + i5 2500K + P67-UD5

Hi all,

First time I turned it on, it failed to turn on but a couple of seconds after, it turned on and everything was fine.
OC to 4Ghz, and tightened RAM to 8-8-8-24 1600 (it's the RAM native specs, but needed to do it manually because intel reads up to 1333).

Did some stress with Prime 95 and Sandra, no errors whatsoever.

But while installing programs, I needed to reboot, and sometimes it fails to boot, like the first time. When it boots though, it runs fine.. Until recently while figuring this out, it turns off in the middle of stressing with Prime 95 a couple of time.
So I used BIOS factory setting, no OC, no RAM tweaks, but sometimes it still fails to boot the first time, sometimes even fails the second and third time, but then it turns on (PC doing it automatically without me pressing the power button)

I thought it could be my PSU not having enough power, so I disconnected both HDD fans, the WD Caviar HDD, and the USB PCI port. But it still do the fail boot thing.

Please help me!!!

My rig consists of (more complete list than the one on sig):

Corsair HX 650
Gigabyte P67-UD5 (BIOS F6)

i5 2500K
1 x Scythe Slip 1200RPM Stream 14mm.
3 x Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1850RPM 120mm
1 x Case Fan 14cm

RipjawsX 8Gb(2x4) 1600 8-8-8-24

Gigabyte GTX 460 Super Overclock

Crucial C300 128GB
WD Caviar Green 1TB
Samsung 7200rpm 500Gb
2x Akasa HDD Cooler 2 fans @ 4500 RPM

Netgear RangeMax WPN311 Wireless PCI Adapter
Belkin USB 2.0 Hi-Speed 5-Port PCI Card

1 x Optical Drive

Thank you in advance people..

I still think it's your PSU. The things you unplugged barely use any power to begin with, so unplugging them very well might not fix the problem. However it seems as though for what you are running, that PSU should be giving enough power. Could still be a bad PSU though.

Makes sense.. I am considering to buy a new one, although I used this PSU only for less then a week! Could it be another issue?

AX 850 and HX 1000 price range is almost the same. Which one do you reckon is better for my case?

Any other suggestions?

Get the HX1000W just for the extra juice.

Recommending a 1000W PSU for i5+GTX 460? We don't even know the issue for one, and that is hugely overkill for his system's needs.

If its the same price then he should get it. But OP, try and get a Corsair HX850W PSU. Should be cheaper and will provide enough power for your system.

Someone told me that it could be motherboard issue. A user had the same motherboard with same problem, so I'm not sure if changing the PSU will solve the problem.
Think about it.. I just ran Prime95 for 6 hours and it didn't turn off.

Besides, just discovered that HX1000 is rated 80-Plus(standard), while AX850 is rated 80-Gold. HX850 is rated 80Gold as well, but in the Corsair's website it's rated 80-Silver. It might be a marketing strategy to sell the newer AX850.
But now I'm sure that I won't get HX1000 because the efficiency is lower than both HX850 and AX850.

Have a look:

Really annoying if it is really a motherboard issue!

Hey kadombing I was wondering if you ever found a solution to your problem because I seem to be having the same one during start up and I have a gigabyte mobo.

Thanks!

You realize you necro'd a dead thread that's over 3 months old, AND the OP hasn't posted on these fourms in over three months...you'll be VERY lucky to get a reply.

You wouldve been better off starting a new thread....

Try updating the bios seems to work for most people, but its a pretty common problem. check the owners club thread for more information and further help.

Lol at this thread though ******* telling him his 650w psu isn't enough, his system could run on a decent 400w easy.
