What to replace crossfired 4870's with?

Thread Starter
Hey guys im a big ATI fan, I'm looking to replace my visiontek 4870 512mb crossfired cards. What should I be looking for? I run 1080p. For now I'd be looking at an expensive high end single card solution. Id be willing to pay 300-350 bucks. I myself have no idea what is the latest greatest or what is the best bang for the buck. I do eventually want to crossfire cards so I will be adding a card at some point.

What do you guys think?

I currently have a Sapphire Tech 6970, but I would advise you to go with a 6950. In a short amount of time, the BIOS for the 6970 will be available for upgrade from the 6950's, and you can essentially get my card for ~$50 less. I have nothing but good stuff to say about Sapphire and my card, and I would recommend it any day.

6950 bios flashed to 6970 would be best bang for $$ you could even get the 6970 for $350 if you didn't want to take the time to flash (though you saive $50 - 100 with the 6950 vs 6970)

I am not afraid to flash the bios of a 6950. Whats the main difference between the 6950 and the 6970?

BIOS is all. Really, it's just the core clock and memory speed that it changes. Go with the 6950 and you won't look back.

Get a 6950 and unlock to 6970, the difference is the shader count if IIRC. You shouldn't be afraid to flash as all 6950s have dual BIOS.

Also, don't get the 1GB Sapphire if you want to flash it. Go big or go home ;-)

Anything that's above 5850 level to make it worth while, if you're thinking of going crossfire again then stay away from the 6850's as 5850's are about the same price but are faster both as a single card and in crossfire.

I personally have no problems with my 5850's and highly recommend them as they're faster then a 5970 and thus faster then a 6950 and a 6970.

I also game at 1080p...
