Is heat pipe direct contact that much better?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for an good heatsink for less than 50 bucks and had some questions and wanted some recommendations.

First off as the subject states, is the heat pipe direct contact that much better? To me it seems it could cause some hot spots on the CPU since there are usually gaps next to the pipe.

Right now I have a couple I'm looking at and wanted opinions from you guys:

It's not worth paying more money for if that's what you're asking

Direct heat pipe contact is probably better if done right but not by much, you need to make sure all the channels are filled with TIM and that can be tricky at first. Spreading thin lines on each pipe seems to be the best most accurate method but this may take two tries to get it just right so the TIM isn't oozing out everywhere.

To alleviate for the gap, I put compound on the direct contact area and then applied the compound as I usually do. A Corsair A50 with direct contact pipes runs about 5*C cooler at full load than a CM N520 with a copper base. Keep in mind that an A50 has a single 120mm fan and the N520 has dual 92mm fans for push/pull.
