5870 Step up

Thread Starter
I had an HD 4870x2 that I RMA'ed. XFX sent me back a 5870. Well, I don't really like it, it has some stuttering problem with max AA in some of my games running at 2048x1080.

At this point, I have someone who wants to buy it for 180, and I have about 250 to spend (excluding that 180). I don't really play games that much but when I do play games I want to max everything. Any suggestions? Should I sell it while the price is still modest?

I just want a good card that I won't need to bother upgrading for 2-3 years.

Either that or I can just keep playing on my 9800GTX+ till the game I want to play come out and see the GPU market then.

Is this 180 dollars or GBP or?

Even if it's dollars, sell it and get either a GTX570 or a 6970. Both are great cards, I was tied between the two and I ended up on the gtx570 purely from a physx side of things.

But either will be epic

6950 2GB & unlock it @ newegg is comes to be 279.98 shipped with a 20 dollar rebate bringing it to 259.98 total when said and done.

Here is a Price comparison between these cards. As you can see the 6950 2GB will be 1.00 more then the 560 when you get your rebate

Without rebates

5870 - $224
560 - $258
6950 1gb - $268
6950 2gb - $279

With Rebates ($20.00 off) the 560 doesnt have a rebate:

5870 - 224 = $204
MSI 560 = $258
6950 1gb - 268 = $248.00
6950 2gb - 279 = $259

The above isn't a bad idea, the 6950 I mean, I wouldn't pee on the GTX 560 if it was on fire.

However, that being said, I don't really like unlocking those cards, whilst at stock 6970 speeds they are ok, any sort of overclocking can be problematic. Also, unlocking increases temps quite significantly.

But it's up to you.

I havent gotten my card yet but let me ask you this all your doing is unlocking shaders. Does that really effect temps that much?

Yes it does, it also causes unstable overclocking after you've unlocked it.

What you need to remember, you're already taking a card that has locked shaders and effectively BIOS overclocking it.

At you resolution maxed out, you should be looking at CF or SLI, either 570/480, or 6950 unclock will do.

CF or Sli will make it go way over my budget. I'd rather get a new SSD with the money I could save from SLI/CF.

Is the 6950 unclock easy to do? I have a 9800GTX+ for PhysX so I don't really need an NVidia card.
