[BUILD LOG] PC Workshop in a Small Shed - Page 2

I do have a couple of updates...

I haven't uploaded the before pictures yet.

We're clearing it out at the weekend. We have a blue office chair (Freecycle) ready to go in, as well as the desk (which I've discovered to be none other than the Ikea Fredrik, a marvellous fairly large desk). The DIR-615 will be configured this weekend, so that it's ready to plug in and go. I've decided to paint the walls a steely blue colour. New carpet will go down there eventually as well. Down there will go all my spare PCs.

I also am considering making a test bench, which will remain on the desk permanently. I have an old bent and broken case which is fit for the purpose.

The shed is aiming to be completed by the end of May, currently.

Right, picture time.
Before.

Home to dead printers, exercise equipment and random junk.
After cleanup:

I can't take any of the credit for this work though. My parents have a few days off and have done practically all of this.
What we've done is waterproof the inside, and have proceeded to chipboard the back wall, roof, and the right hand wall.

And a bonus, my current workspace:

The PC on the desk is the Pentium 4 workstation that is going down into the shed, alongside both the monitors (the beige Relisys is being wall mounted). Under the table there are 3 ATX cases, these will either be built up, modded, or binned.
The DIR-615 still needs configuring.

Maybe I missed it, but how are you gonna lock the shed up?

Good ol' padlock?

No, we've got a decent Yale lock to fit on it.
The lock that's already on it is more that suitable for now though.

It's done, painted and stuff has been moved down. The DIR-615 is configured as a repeater bridge but very very slow. The PC is down there and works fine though.

Pics to follow tomorrow.

I am tempted to run down an Ethernet cable, but it's going to take a lot of cable, and I'm worried about running it outside (its a very small hole in the wall that I want to run it through).

Oh thats good, was worried you were gonna have a poor locking system! Wouldn't want a thread about that...!

For what it's worth, my dad ran some bare cables (no connectors on the end), standard CAT5's through my brothers outer wall, across the house, and then into my wall, and finally crimped some connections.

Works great for the past 10ish years!
And I don't think they were any specified buried/outside ethernet cables either! (which is a bit risky..)

Otherwise, they've been great!

Yay... Update. Nice. How is your climate control in there BTW? Ventilation? It looks like no AC or Heater, but I guess the latter is sorta optional.

Ventilation isn't brilliant, but I do have a portable heater that runs down there in the cold, and a little fan in the hot, but I think it'll be reasonably OK.

It's done, and painted, and everything is down there, but I've been too busy trying to sort the frigging D-Link out, that I've not had time to take photos. It works as a bridge, but the speed keeps varying between less than 1mbps and 7mbps, can't work out why. I am at the point of giving up, as Ethernet is going to be difficult to do, as it's a very small hole to run the cable through, and the equipment needed to chop one end off, put it back on, and sort it out, is more expensive than the cable.

Not only this, but the computer down there is now hooked into the Dell monitor. And it will only do 1024x768, won't do the 1280x1024 that the Dell is rated for. Any suggestions? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, but am considering switching to 7 when I get the chance.

I do have a spare PC down there as well. An old ThinkPad X31, with no top half, hooked into the Relisys. A new HDD is on the way, as the Deathstar inside it is slowly getting more bad sectors.

Photos will be posted at the weekend.
