The prob with your DLink is not uncommon, and depending on your internet speed, it sounds about right... Even at 100% signal strength, you will lose 50% of the bandwidth in the bridge mode, since 50% has to be used as a uplink and 50% for downlink. If your bridge and router distance is more than 50FT away with walls and obstructions between it, you would only see about 30 to 50% of the signal strength, which means that you would only see 15 to 25% of your rated speeds. Add the factor of interference issues of other people's router, wireless devices, and etc, your realistic average bandwidth will be pretty poor...

As for your DELL resolutions issues, it sounds like a driver problem. Ubuntu is great, and I have used in on and off for the past few years, but when it comes to support for graphics, it's rather poor, unless you are using Nvidia cards, which Proprietary drivers will be readily available.

I've tried to put Windows 7 on that rig, but it just fails completely. If I install audio drivers, the install craps out, and then it won't even recognise that there's an OS.

I wish I'd stuck with Ubuntu, but my folks want Windows and can't understand why I won't use XP :l

I do have carpet down there. Well, large offcuts from a new living room carpet.

The D-Link, after relocation, I'm getting speeds that vary between 2.5 and 7.5. That's good enough for me. I just have to unplug the router while downloading files via wifi or it takes forever. It works fairly well but not brilliantly. At least I know it's configured correctly now.

The card in that rig is an ATI X600. I tried forcing the res but xorg.conf was empty. I should point out that until the move, the computer used the Relisys at 1024x768 instead of the Dell. I will put Ubuntu 11.04 on when its out. I want to get a dual boot with 7 and Ubuntu running, but of course that relies on 7 being installed first.

The ThinkPad HDD I bought has more bad sectors than the old one. So what I'll do is run it till one drive dies, replace the drive with the other drive, then run it till that dies, then throw the lot.

The only thing I want to put down there now is a landline. We have 3 Panasonic KX-TG7301s in the house itself, and the option to add another. These do internal calls, so I can dial other handsets in the house.

However I'm reluctant to spend £40 on a phone for a shed. I wonder whether a standard DECT handset would work for this?
