Just bought The Orange Box, question...

I played HL2 on that crap Xbox 1 port way back when and gave up on it pretty early, just had a classic vibe last night and bout TOB off steam and installed HL2 and the Episodes.

Now I love games vanilla mostly but never minded some mods, mostly graphics enhancements, I went crazy in Oblivion with all the texture replacers etc... And so I got curious as to what is out there for HL2, so after checking it out most people love Cinematic Mod 10 and it looks really sweet but it changes the game sooo much.... and havign never beat any of the games I really wanna play them as they were intended, although some updated texturing or models would be a great boost to the fun...

So what are your guy's fave mods for this? I have googled forever and I have found a few good High Res texture and skin packs that look good but dont know what version is the latest and what ones I need etc. maybe you guys know?

CM10 is really all I can personally recommend. It doesn't change up the game itself, only makes it look extremely pretty. Give the game a run-through with it.

Ya I guess i'ma give it a shot, I love the quality and work put in to it, that's deff as best the Source engine will ever do, I just don't like how it makes the whole game sooo much darker, kinda changes Valve's vision. But i'ts pretty so Valve's vision is kaput I guess.

yeah definately get the cinematic mod, but I would beat the vanilla version first because cm10 is totally different feeling. Just my opinion. And with cm10 you have the option to change the character models, keeping them vanilla or cinematic mod (which is totally different and I did not like it). It's really amazing how much work the guy did to hl2. And hey, hl2 still looks pretty good these days.

I like CM, but I could argue either way for a first playthrough. HL2 does have a certain magic that is somewhat lost with CM, even when you put on all the vanilla character models (via the character pimper that comes with CM). HL2 still looks pretty good TBH. It looks better than it used to since HL2 and EP1 got ported to the Orange box Source engine (giving very high texture option and better lighting). CM for a second playthrough, I would say is the way to do it.

Thanx man, your thinking how i'm thinking exactly lol.... by the time I get CM downloaded I will be alot farther into the game, i'm playing now as it downloads and it will take most of the day prolly.... so i'll be alot farther and have seen alot of Vanilla HL2 before I even have the option of installing CM.

Vanilla isnt a bad looking game really, the environments are rather barren and plain but really it's not bad, gameplay is golden. I'll prolly install CM when it is done, if I ever want to switch back to Vanilla for a bit what would I need to do? Rename the mod folders?

What all was changed with the orange box engine? is it just a enhanced/matured source engine?

Yeah, they updated the Source engine when EP1 came out, and HL2 stayed on Source 2004 engine, then EP2 came out with the source 2007 (orange box) engine, and HL2 stayed on Source 2004. Then when steam went to Mac, they ported HL2 into the source 2007 engine, probably so they would only have to port one flavour of Source to Mac.

EP1 engine's biggest noticeable difference was bloom, and EP2's was very high textures. There's a big list of things they changed, but nothing groundbreaking.

You can't switch your current game to CM10 once you download it, you will have to start again. Or you could cheat to get to your current place in the game, but it isn't your game per say, you'll have the guns and ammo that the developers thought would be needed for the current level you load.

Oh, by the way, when you're done with the HL2 storyline, there are tons of mods made for HL2, check out my sig.

I'd just play it as is the first time. It's a masterpiece, and mods might change the overall feel and impression the game leaves. That's just me, and I normally mod every game I can.

I have always been disgustedly AGAINST the use of CM. Technically, texture resolution is higher but the art style is lost, people's faces, while looking more realistic in a screenshot, have harder-to-read emotions, and look much less empathetic. Alyx is also made into a boob-job, which made me facepalm.

HL2's mods are not like Oblivion's; the good ones are standalone games kept very seperate from HL2 itself. Just play the vanilla game to get the right experience.
