I just ordered one for my 480 FTW HC, I am in mostly for a clean final look, Being that its underwater, I dont know if it will actually help with temps....we will see.

As others have said they don't do much. they help add stability and in some cases can shave one or two c's off. Also they just look bad as heck!

They do look pretty awesome. I was rather irritated that the top of the line 480 didnt come with one. Seems logical that it should come with one. But oh well, they are pretty cheap.

470/480 EVGA backplates do help slightly with cooling since they come with thermal pads.

570/580 backplates are simply for looks and rigidity, they do not come with thermal pads.

There was some kind of pad on the one I just got by the gpu area only though. Shaved 2-3c off load temps.

That's just a soft pad to keep the plate off the board (same goes with the clear little bumpers).

The 2-3c was likely something related to the removal/installation of the card.

Have a look at Artic cooling. They make badass coolers but you will also need to purchase the VR heat sink set for the VRAMS etc. In this case - VR004
