[Wired] Google Lets Users Double-Down on Account Security

The net is getting a little safer for Google users Thursday, as the company unveils an option to lock down their accounts with more than just a password.

Starting Thursday all Google users can choose to turn on a so-called “two-factor authentication†feature, which will require them to type in a special, short-lived second password in addition to their normal password to get into their account. Users will be able to get the codes by text or a phone call, or use smart phone apps for Android, iPhone and Blackberry to generate the codes.
Banks and financial insitutions really should provide better authentication to their customers.... sad that Google is making the effort before them.
Once again...

Sad that a free email provider is taking the lead in user authentication?

More like ridiculous.

I guess you forget who provides that free email. Google. It's not just some flimsy email provider like yahoo, this is Google. They own God. And, I've heard, a team of howler monkeys.

This feature alone is enough to make me switch to their emailing service.

They are speaking about Gmail, correct?

My bank has been using SMS codes for a while now. I only need one static password to get into my online banking service, but transferring money to accounts that are not in my previous transaction history requires entering a code sent via SMS (it replaces the old secret question/answer system).

FYI Blizzard has had this implemented for about 3 years now. Both as a usb stick and an app for phones. And my bank has also implemented similar technology to this.

Paypal lets you do this. Chase wont let you log in from a new location without this.

I'm staying opted out as long as I can. It's annoying enough to have to remember one password. I sure as hell aren't interested in having to remember one password, then constantly try to memorize a short-lived temporary one, when all I'm protecting is crappy game videos and some trollish comments! It's overkill!
