[AI] Apple working on smaller, $200 contract-free iPhone to combat Android - report

Apple is working on a new design and form factor for the iPhone that would allow for a less expensive, contract-free model to take on the competing Google Android platform and bypass wireless carrier contracts, according to Bloomberg.

In a report filed Thursday afternoon, authors Peter Burrows and Greg Bensinger cited anonymous sources in revealing that Apple has allegedly developed a prototype iPhone model that is cheaper and one-third smaller than the current-generation iPhone 4. The report claimed that Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs "aims to narrow the price gap that has made phones running Android more popular than iPhones" with the new handset targeted for launch in mid-2011.

"Apple has considered selling the new iPhone for about $200, without obligating users to sign a two-year service contract, said the person who has seen it," the report states. It also noted it's possible the project could be delayed or scrapped entirely, as "Apple often works on products that do not later get released."

Bring it to Virgin Mobile ( no contracts ), And we have a deal .

DOn't see it either. Besides, I think they are going the wrong way. I bet more people would buy a 4.1/4.2" 960*640 iPhone than a smaller screened one.

Apple working on making something cheaper....... yeah, I'm sure that we can just go ahead and file this thread. j/k.

A lot of people like IOS or just like IPhone's because they like Apple products. If this is true, then nice to see them reaching out so more people can have one.
Apple makes cheap things good not good things cheap. I highly doubt they will create a $200 contract-free iPhone for consumers. Even the iPod Touch isn't at that price point!

I read a rumor on cnet that apple was going to make an iphone without the home button, maybe this is that phone. It would allow for a smaller size...

Apple FAIL.

Android's overtaken them, and the tendency will continue. El-cheapo contracts, on 100% open OS, with 100% customisable GUI, and a million different terminals to choose. Sorry, but Android >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> iOS.

Id say Android is mostly open, not all of its features are. Also, It would only make sense that Android devices have "overtaken" iOS devices. Until recently iPhones have only officially been on at&t while Android devices have been on multiple carriers since the beginning.

But anyway,

Gizmodo just posted an article on this too. It has some more interesting details. http://gizmodo.com/#!5759243/perfectly-timed-iphone-rumor-hints-at-tiny-iphones

The WSJ all but confirms rumors we heard inklings of earlier this month, in which Apple was said to be developing a small, less expensive iPhone that would be tinier than the already diminutive iPhone 4.

I thought I read that the current iPhone4's build cost was only ~$180.

If apple stopped rorting it's customers and dropped the retail price down a couple hundred dollars, then they wouldn't have to make a "less expensive" iPhone at all.

Also, the Android OS will continue to dominate if Apple doesn't make iOS and the App store more open.

You guys seem to imply that the iPhone cost's more than any other smart phone of its type. It looks like generally these types of phones generally cost about the same to build. And I believe that the best Android phones all seem to retail for around $200 with a contract. The same price the iPhone has sold for.
