980X + P6T = Fail? - Page 2

I'd be more suspect of it if it hadn't been happening to my other chip too... I had a 920 in there before and was getting constant 124 errors with it as well. I've stepped back the multiplier to 29 to see where that leaves me- frankly I'm not sure if the P6T can handle 4+ in any form.

I'm starting to wonder if I should just go out and grab a Rampage III and get it over with. I think subconsciously I'm just looking for an excuse to do it

So I'm back to x29 multiplier, 133 bclock, 2400 uncore and 4800 qpi link data rate... with just about everything else on auto (because it's all stock frequencies anyway...

I've tried different RAM but it hasn't changed anything... and my other 920 did the same thing as this at 200x21...

Stren, are you still talking QPI / Dram voltages there?

I haven't been overclocking RAM yet because I don't really need to for what these machines primarily do- which is folding. But it's good to have a reference. +1 rep for you guys.
Yup I was talking QPI/DRAM. Some processors like some multipliers more than others. Mine seems to prefer 25x173, my other 980x seemed to prefer 23x193. Make sure you don't have a really old bios either otherwise you might suffer from multiplier throttling. The latest bios was released in november.

A good way to overclock the 980x is to find the limits of each part independently as it's easier to figure out what voltage is required for each part i.e. look at
1. maximum multiplier with low bclk and slowed ram
2. maximum blck with low multiplier and slowed ram
3. maximum ram frequency with low multiplier and low bclk

After all of this is done you have your theoretical maximum, of course you probably can't get close to this maximum and certainly would need more voltage than each case independently so you'll have to back off, but it gives you an idea.

I'm not convinced the p6t really let's you overclock the 980x as far as it could go, but I'm certainly no expert and I may just have not had good chips.

I'm not surprised the 920 couldn't push more above 200, I don't think the board can handle bclks much higher than that. I struggled to push past 195 before. If you can return the board without losing a lot of money I would upgrade. Certainly for a 920 D0 a R3E would be a better choice, for the 980x, I'd almost save the money and get the R3F because you don't need to hit crazy high bclks.

I may have missed it but what are you running on your vcore?

I've stepped the vcore down to 1.35 for 133x29. My P6TV2 +980X combo is running at ~1.3625 I think and like I said it's been going solid for over a month straight (folding).

I started with that and bumped it up a little bit in response to the suggestion above that it could be vcore related despite the 124 code. I went up as high as 1.3750 but stopped there because I'm still looking at QPI...

Could just be that I'm underestimating QPI / Dram power requirements. I read somewhere else that QPI shouldn't be put higher than 1.25- no idea how true that is but it's stuck in my mind. I was afraid that I'd been overvolting the QPI at 1.35 so I figured perhaps the 124 was telling me to drop the QPI voltage... but having dropped it back down to 1.2 and worked my way up I think it's in fact telling me that it's not enough.

How high do I push QPI before I'm overdoing it? I saw 1.38-1.39 there but that was for an ungodly amount of OC'd Ram...

Yeah with 6gb at stock frequencies I don't think you should need to go that high.

Stupid question - you have load line calibration on right? I can only think the voltages are drooping under load because at 29x133 I would have expected you to be able to do at <1.3.

If you've seen it be happy in the other board with the same ram and the same processor I would try and get rid of this board.

Oh I could probably drop it Down but 1.35 was a start. With that being said it's been happy for a couple hours now and still running. I think the p6t hardware is the weak link here. I'm thinking I'll update to a rampage 3 gene.

Yeah most likely, I did notice some people around though with D0's on a p6t hitting 210+ bclks, so there are some p6t boards that can do it.

The gene looks like a great board for the price particularly if you don't need more than 2 pci-e slots.

For folding I think I need the expansion room. In my quest I've found the p6x58d-e and premium. They're available on clearance from a local shop so I might run with thAt instead. Naturally my mind will switch 5 times between now and then.

Thanks again for the help!

Okay, well it's official. I was swayed at the last minute to the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R instead. Reviewed really well and guys overclocking with it say it's a dream. I've purchased 2 of those to replace the P6Ts I had for 1 980X system and the 920 I'm building. Will advise!
