Q6600 overclock question.

Thread Starter
Hey fellow OCN members!
I recently recieved a free Q6600 from a friend, I just need to buy a motherboard and RAM for it. I'd like to overclock it to 3.0GHz and above, but don't know which speed RAM and what motherboard to get. I was looking at these two boards in particular.

or

Which one is better for overclocking, and which speed memory should I get for a good overclock?

Thanks for any and all help.

Both the boards you've mentioned above are really bad. A P45 board is what you should be looking for especially GB UD3R/P boards are OC'ing beasts. Have also heard alot about Biostar IP45

e-e neither of those are very good bud. You want to get a P45 board as they offer the best overclocking ability out of any board out there.

Look for a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R or GA-EP45-UD3P, Asus P5Q Pro, and a few others, but those are the top ones I can recall.

Personally I would get the GA-EP45-UD3R if you don't want a 2 cards, get the UD3P if you want to do crossfire down the road.

These cannot be had on newegg any longer, but if you look on amazon, ebay, and a few other places, you can find them. Also keep your eyes open here on OCN as members tend to sell them from time to time as well. I got my UD3P for 110 shipped straight and it was a 140 USD board (plus shipping). Now they probably go for about 100 or a little lower.

Okay, well if I were to find, say a Asus P5Q Pro board, what RAM would you recommend?
It says it accepts DDR2 1300/1200/1066/800/667.

Max Overclock i'd want is around 3.4-3.6.
I guess im not too sure exactly how the speed correlates to the FSB. xD

To get anywhere near that you need a decent CPU cooler, get a CM 212+. Get a decent CAS5 1066MHz memory kit.

I had heard the 212+ was the beast cooler for 775. I'll go with that then.
This look good for Ram?

Yea that GSkill is a good kit, I've used them on 2 builds and they work well with intel chipsets.

Your board is going to have to be ebay / used to get a good one, since they are all discontinued. P45 or X48/X38. DFI X48 T2RSB Plus is what mine is on (see in sig), and it's one of the most solid rigs I've ever had. You can find that board on ebay if you're patient.

P45 is a bit of overkill, since you won't be going much over 400FSB, if even. They are needed for the 45nm quads/duals that have lower multiples and need 450-500FSB.
