120mm for intake - Page 3

post #21 of 27
I sit with the front of my case a half meter from my right ear. I use a Gentle Typhoon AP-12 (800 rpm) there.

When I built my daughter's rig I put it in a Lian Li aluminum case with a fan holder in three of the 5.25 slots. I gave her the opportunity to listen to and feel the output of all the fans she liked (and I have many). She picked the AP-12. That was my fan. I had to order another.

Other excellent fans include the Nexus Real Silent fan. It's the favorite at SPCR, and justifiably so.

A Yate Loon Low D12SL-12 is an excellent quiet fan. So is the Enermax Cluster (PWM) and the Slip Stream 800 rpm and 1200 rpm.

You can look at item 1 in my sig, but that chip runs hot, so the truly quiet fans could not cool it adequately.

Static pressure of a fan is more relevant if the fan is to push or pull through something with high resistance (eg a CPU heatsink or a radiator).

For case intake/exhaust, the fan is set up against the case' fan grill (bee-hive type usually) whose resistance is relatively low. Other factors, particularly CFM, should have your higher priority for consideration.

So does Scythe Slip Stream 140mm have high or low static pressure? Would it work well as CPU cooler, intake, exhaust or all?

I'm doing testing now with 140mm fans in the center position of my D14 on an i860@4GHz.

P14: 54.3c TOA, 25.8dBA
TY-140: 52.4c TOA, 20dBA
KM2-1200: 53.6c TOA, 21.3dBA
KM-1200: 56c TOA, 20dBA

TOA = temp over ambient
KM = Kaze Maru
KM2 = Kaze Maru 2 = Slip Stream 140

The KM2 is a superb fan. The TY-140 is better, and it is PWM. But if you can't wait for it the KM2 is the fan to get.

I asked frozenCPU if it came with Am3 mounting kits and it does. Let us know whta it arrives with as I'm planning on importing one here to NZ.

Quote from Mark, "It comes with a 2 pc am2 mounting bracket "

I like Ultra Kaze's with a fan controller, otherwise they may be too loud for most people.
they have less CFM than the GT's, but not by much, and they are half the cost.
